She earned major recognition for 3 Women, brought an unmistakable comic presence to Popeye, and built a lasting television legacy as the creator, presenter, and executive producer of children’s anthologies. This ranking weighs critical recognition, signature performances, cultural reach, range, and career importance. The order is an editorial judgment, not a definitive consensus list.
Shelley Duvall’s 10 best movies and TV shows
-
3 Women (1977)
Duvall’s performance as Millie Lammoreaux is the strongest choice for the top spot on artistic and critical grounds. She won the Best Actress award at Cannes for the film, and the British Film Institute has described her work as one of the decade’s great performances. In Robert Altman’s elusive drama, Duvall makes Millie’s social confidence and underlying loneliness both vivid and unsettling.

The Shining (1980)
As Wendy Torrance, Duvall anchors Stanley Kubrick’s horror film with a performance built on fear, resourcefulness, and fierce protectiveness. It is the role for which she is most widely remembered, but it is not the whole story of her career. The British Film Institute discusses the intensity of her work; accounts of the production, including the often-cited number of takes for a baseball-bat scene, should be treated as reported claims rather than a verified production log.
-
Popeye (1980)
Duvall’s Olive Oyl is a striking counterpoint to the terror of The Shining: all angular movement, comic timing, and sudden tenderness. The Guardian praised her mix of slapstick and pathos. It also reported Altman’s assessment: “nobody else could have played Olive Oyl like Shelley. Nobody else looks like that.” The film was Duvall’s final collaboration with Altman.

Nashville (1975)
Altman’s sprawling ensemble drama is an essential stop in Duvall’s formative screen years. She is part of a large cast rather than the film’s central focus, but Nashville shows how naturally she fit the director’s loose, overlapping approach to character and performance. The film is among her titles recognized by the National Film Registry.
-
Faerie Tale Theatre (1982–1987)
This anthology belongs on a list of Duvall’s best work because she helped shape it, not simply because she appeared on screen. She created, presented, and executive-produced the series, which adapted familiar fairy tales with an array of performers and directors. It demonstrates her role as a television architect and host, expanding her legacy beyond acting in feature films.
Rank #2
-
Brewster McCloud (1970)
Duvall’s first leading film role also began her feature-film collaboration with Altman. Set around a reclusive young man in Houston’s Astrodome, the film is an eccentric early showcase for her distinctive screen presence. Its place here reflects both its importance in her career and the unusual world she helped bring to life.
-
Thieves Like Us (1974)
Another key Altman-era feature, Thieves Like Us places Duvall in a Depression-era crime drama adapted from Edward Anderson’s novel. It is less often the first title mentioned in a survey of her career than 3 Women or Nashville, but it helps trace her developing work within Altman’s ensemble-driven filmmaking.

-
Annie Hall (1977)
Duvall makes a memorable supporting appearance in Woody Allen’s comedy as a rock journalist. The role is brief compared with her work in 3 Women, but it adds another tonal register to a year that showcased her dramatic range. Annie Hall is also among her films recognized by the National Film Registry.
-
Time Bandits (1981)
Terry Gilliam’s fantasy adventure gives Duvall a place in a world of irreverent comedy and surreal spectacle. It is a useful reminder that her screen career was not confined to Altman’s dramas or Kubrick’s horror: she could make herself at home in films that traded in broad invention and the fantastic.

SHINING THE BluRay Heres Johnny.....a Stanley Kubrick movie- Stanley Kubrick’s iconic horror film based on Stephen King’s novel
- Jack Nicholson’s unforgettable performance as Jack Torrance
- Chilling atmosphere in the haunted Overlook Hotel

Tall Tales & Legends (1985–1986)
Duvall’s second anthology entry on this list reflects the sustained producer career that can disappear behind her most famous film roles. She executive-produced the series, which adapted stories rooted in American folklore. It received a 1988 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Children’s Program, recognizing the television work she helped build.
Why the ranking includes television
Duvall’s television legacy was substantial enough to merit space alongside her films. The Television Academy lists her as an executive producer of Faerie Tale Theatre, Tall Tales & Legends, Nightmare Classics, Shelley Duvall’s Bedtime Stories, and Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle. Her programs received 15 CableACE nominations and eight wins from 1983 to 1995, according to the Texas State Historical Association. The Television Academy also records two Emmy nominations: for Tall Tales & Legends in 1988 and Shelley Duvall’s Bedtime Stories in 1992.
Best Value
Readers ranking only acting performances might place the two anthology series in a separate television category. Including them here recognizes the full scope of Duvall’s work as an actor, presenter, creator, and producer.
Other Shelley Duvall titles worth seeking out
This is one defensible selection, not a claim that other titles are lesser by any objective measure. McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Bernice Bobs Her Hair, Frankenweenie, and Roxanne are among the other works that could feature in a different balance of film and television. Duvall’s final performance was in the independent horror film The Forest Hills (2023), following a 20-year acting hiatus.
Duvall’s career beyond her most famous role
Duvall died on July 11, 2024, aged 75. The Texas State Historical Association reports that complications from diabetes caused her death. Her filmography and television producing work tell a broader story than the shorthand of a career ending with The Shining: from early Altman collaborations to award-winning performances and the children’s series she helped create, her work crossed genres and media for decades.
