Krupabai Satthianadhan’s Saguna is described as the first autobiographical novel by an Indian woman writing in English—not the first novel in English by an Indian woman. Toru Dutt’s Bianca: The Young Spanish Maiden appeared earlier, in 1878. That distinction matters when tracing the history of Indian writing in English.
What is Saguna?
Saguna: A Story of Native Christian Life is a novel by Krupabai Satthianadhan, an Indian writer whose story draws substantially on her life and the social atmosphere of her time. Oindrila Mukherjee’s 2016 account in Scroll.in calls it the first autobiographical novel by an Indian woman writing in English. “Autobiographical novel” signals a work that combines fictional elements with material shaped by the author’s experience; it is not a claim that every event in the book is a literal record.

Was it the first novel in English by an Indian woman?
No. Scroll.in corrected its earlier wording to distinguish the two literary-historical claims: Toru Dutt’s Bianca: The Young Spanish Maiden, published in 1878, was the earlier novel in English by an Indian woman. Saguna is identified instead as the first autobiographical novel by an Indian woman. The distinction is between an earlier novel and a later work recognized for its autobiographical character, not a contest over literary merit.

How was Saguna published?
The novel first appeared in serial form in the Madras Christian College Magazine from 1887 to 1888. It was published as a book in 1895, a year after Satthianadhan’s death, under the title Saguna: A Story of Native Christian Life. Oxford University Press reissued it in 1998 with an introduction by editor Chandani Lokuge, using the title Saguna: The First Autobiographical Novel by an Indian Woman, according to Mukherjee’s article.

What themes does the novel explore?
Mukherjee’s reading emphasizes the interplay of Christian faith and conversion with women’s lives, education, and the pursuit of intellectual independence. The protagonist, Saguna, pushes against the expectation that marriage should be the principal goal of a woman’s ambition and expresses a desire for independence and intellectual work. The novel’s social interest lies in how those aspirations encounter the limits imposed on women’s choices.
Mukherjee also distinguishes passages of evangelical reflection from scenes of domestic life and gendered constraint. In that reading, Saguna works both as a literary narrative and as a window onto the perspective of an educated Indian woman in the late nineteenth century. These are interpretive emphases from her 2016 article, rather than claims of a universal critical consensus.
