Furby first appeared in 1998 as a Tiger Electronics interactive pet: a soft, expressive toy designed to react to sound, light, movement and touch. Its Furbish language, gradual shift toward English and stimulus-driven responses made programmed behavior feel like a developing relationship. Later versions changed how children interacted with it, adding voice recognition, app-linked play and, in the 2023 relaunch, voice-activated modes, music and lights.
How Furby began: a toy built to seem alive
Furby’s origin is rooted in the late-1990s ambition to make an electronic toy feel less like a device and more like a creature. Hasbro’s 1998 corporate filing lists Tiger Electronics as a subsidiary and says the company planned to introduce Furby that year. The official Furby brand history credits Tiger with creating it. Those sources establish the launch year, but not a definitive day when the toy first reached retail shelves.
Contemporaneous WIRED coverage from September 1998 describes an evolving prototype, the engineering and manufacturing challenge of getting it ready, and retailers’ interest ahead of the holiday season. That account captures a product still being developed, rather than serving as a final technical specification. WIRED’s 1998 report shows that the character’s apparent spontaneity had to be engineered amid practical production pressures.
The original spoke Furbish, a made-up language, and was designed to incorporate more English through repeated play. Its reactions to stimuli helped create the impression that it was learning. Guinness World Records describes sound, light and movement sensors, touch response, naps and infrared interaction between Furbies. These features made the toy responsive; they do not establish that it understood language or learned in the modern technical sense of artificial intelligence.

Why the original Furby felt so different
Furby’s central trick was the combination of a recognizable character and reactions that changed with the situation. A sound or touch could prompt a response; a period of quiet could suggest a nap. Its speech also gave repeated interaction a story: the toy appeared to move from Furbish toward English, even though that progression was part of its programmed behavior.
This mix of softness, movement, sound and apparent development was more important to the experience than any claim that Furby was a thinking machine. The toy invited owners to interpret its reactions—to treat a sound as a mood or a change in speech as progress. That illusion of companionship is the thread connecting the original to later generations, even as the inputs and play patterns changed.

- A FUNNY FUZZY FRIEND: Furby is a great friend for anytime, rain or shine! They even speak their own Furbish language and love to be pet, brushed, and fed
- ALWAYS AN ORIGINAL: The adorably big ears and eyes, soft fur, and outrageous personality are just a few of the reasons Furby has remained an un-fur-gettable pop culture icon
- DOES NOT CONNECT TO THE INTERNET (BUT DOES SHUT OFF): Furby doesn't connect to the internet or other devices for a screen-free experience. Even better, Furby can power down when the fun is done for the day
- FURBY TALKS TO OTHER FURBY FRIENDS: When you have 2 Furby friends together, pair them up and watch them interact! Furby also reacts to the Furblets mini friends. All Furby friends each sold separately.

The first craze and what the sales figures mean
Furby became a major holiday toy, but the headline numbers should be read with their publishers attached. The official Furby brand history reports 1.8 million units sold during the 1998 holiday season; the page does not state its publication year. Hasbro’s June 22, 2023 relaunch announcement says the original sold more than 40 million units in its first three years. These are company-published figures, not an independently audited sales series.
Hasbro’s 2023 announcement also describes the 1998 debut as “craze-inducing” and says Furby affected music, television and film. Those are the company’s characterizations of the toy’s cultural impact. The sources cited here do not establish a complete model-by-model sales history, lifetime revenue total or independent market-share measure. Hasbro’s 2023 announcement is the source for its first-three-years figure.

| Return, 2012 | Sound recognition and touch shaped responses; Hasbro framed the toy as developing a personality in response to how it was treated. | Hasbro’s 2012 announcement describes the sensors and personality-oriented play. |
| Furby Boom era, 2012–13 | Physical play connected to an app where virtual offspring could be hatched and raised. | The official brand history describes the app play. This is a documented historical feature, not a claim about current app availability. |
| Relaunch, 2023 | Voice-activated modes, songs, lights, sounds, touch reactions, pretend feeding and styling accessories. | Hasbro described five voice-activated modes and more than 600 responses for this edition. |
2005: voice enters the conversation
The 2005 generation added voice recognition, an important change from the original toy’s more stimulus-driven interaction. The official brand history also notes new colors. The sources support this as a significant generation milestone, but do not offer a complete inventory of every 2005 model or regional variation.
2012: personality as a play pattern
In its 2012 announcement, Hasbro said that sound recognition and touch sensors shaped Furby’s responses. It described the toy as developing a personality based on how its owner treated it, while retaining Furbish and increasing English use through play. “Personality” here is Hasbro’s framing for programmed responses, not evidence of an independent inner life. Furby Boom extended play onto a screen: the official brand history describes an app in which virtual offspring could be hatched and raised. This tied a physical toy to a digital play loop, a contrast with the screen-free experience emphasized in Hasbro’s 2023 positioning. The documented app feature does not establish whether the app remains available today.

2023: voice commands, music and lights
Hasbro’s June 2023 announcement described the relaunched Furby as having five voice-activated modes and more than 600 responses, including songs, lights and sounds. It also highlighted touch reactions, pretend feeding and styling accessories. Those counts are manufacturer feature claims for the 2023 edition; they are not a standardized measure of intelligence and should not be generalized to every Furby.
Hasbro said the toy was available online at Amazon at launch. That launch-channel statement does not confirm current stock, price or availability. The announcement quotes Kristin McKay, Hasbro’s vice president and general manager of fashion and preschool, saying the company had spent time understanding what children wanted in a new Furby. The statement explains the company’s design rationale, not independent evidence of how children responded.

Furby’s history also includes smaller products and licensed merchandise. In a Hasbro designer interview, the company describes Furblets as compact musical products with more than 45 sound effects, the ability to harmonize and interaction with larger Furby toys. These are manufacturer descriptions of the product line, rather than independently measured performance claims. What Furby’s history says about interactive toys
Across its documented milestones, Furby kept the same basic promise—an expressive toy that reacts to its owner—while changing the mechanics of that interaction. The original’s sensors and Furbish-to-English conceit encouraged owners to read change into repeated play. Voice recognition in 2005 and personality-oriented responses in 2012 made interaction more explicit; Furby Boom added app-based play; the 2023 version foregrounded voice commands, music and lights.
That continuity helps explain why Furby can be remembered both as a late-1990s holiday phenomenon and as a product repeatedly reimagined for new play habits. The best-supported story is not that the toy became artificial intelligence, but that designers kept updating a carefully staged illusion of responsiveness.
