There is no single definitive ranking of the best Indian web series of 2024. For viewers choosing between the contemporary parenting comedy of Raat Jawaan Hai and the real-event thriller IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, the more useful question is what kind of story they want. This selection emphasizes editorial recognition, distinct storytelling, and—in a separate measure—audience reach, without confusing popularity with quality.
What makes a web series one of 2024’s best?
“Best” is a critical judgment, not an official award or settled list. Scroll’s year-end selection described its choices as top streaming shows across languages and presented them alphabetically, while Indian Express critic Shubhra Gupta said her picks were in no particular order and valued consistency in storytelling and work that breaks new ground. Those are useful editorial standards, but they do not produce one universal ranking.

Audience size offers a different perspective. Ormax Media estimated how many people in India watched at least one full episode of particular series in 2024. That is an estimate of reach—not a rating of craft, critical standing, or whether a series will suit an individual viewer.
Two different starting points: comedy-drama or historical thriller?
Raat Jawaan Hai: a contemporary parenting comedy
Raat Jawaan Hai appears in Scroll’s 2024 selection. Its premise has been described as a comedy about modern parenting, making it a contrasting starting point for viewers after a contemporary, everyday-life comedy rather than a crisis thriller. The available evidence does not establish its episode count, full cast, current streaming availability, or a more detailed official synopsis.

IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack: a limited series about a real crisis
IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack is a six-episode Netflix limited series created and written by Anubhav Sinha and Trishant Srivastava. Netflix’s catalog lists Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, and Vijay Varma among its stars; Netflix’s launch announcement also names Arvind Swami, Dia Mirza, Patralekhaa, Amrita Puri, Anupam Tripathi, Kumud Mishra, and Manoj Pahwa. Netflix’s series page provides its official listing.
The series dramatizes the hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight IC 814, which departed Kathmandu for New Delhi on December 24, 1999. Netflix’s August 2024 announcement describes the hijacking as a seven-day ordeal. Indian Express critic Shubhra Gupta identifies Captain Devi Sharan’s book Flight Into Fear as one source for the series; that makes the book relevant further reading, not an official companion product. Gupta’s review discusses the adaptation.

Netflix’s own promotional description emphasizes a team racing to decipher the hijackers’ demands and secure the passengers’ return. That is the streamer’s framing of the drama, not independent verification of its historical accuracy. Viewers looking for a documentary account should distinguish a scripted limited series from factual reporting or archival documentary.
How many people watched the most prominent series?
Ormax Media’s figures below are estimates of viewers in India during 2024, not global totals. Ormax says its estimate counts people who watched at least one full episode, is based on primary research projected to India’s OTT universe, and counts people rather than accounts; a person watching in multiple weeks is not counted repeatedly. The values indicate estimated reach, not a quality ranking.

These are Ormax’s 2024 India estimates, using its one-full-episode threshold and audience methodology. They are not a comprehensive list of the year’s series or a measure of critical merit. Ormax’s 2024 most-watched streaming shows report explains the estimates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which one should you watch?
- Choose Raat Jawaan Hai if a contemporary comedy about modern parenting sounds more appealing than a dramatization of a national crisis.
- Choose IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack if you want a finite, six-episode dramatic account centered on a real hijacking and its unfolding crisis.
- Use viewership as context, not a verdict. The Ormax estimate places IC 814 among the named high-reach series, but it cannot tell you whether it is the strongest show or the right fit for you.
