There is no authoritative all-time ranking of YouTube apology videos. But some public responses became controversies of their own: their formats seemed out of step with the moment, their wording drew attention back to the creator, or they left questions of responsibility unresolved. By those editorial measures, Colleen Ballinger’s ukulele video, Logan Paul’s Aokigahara response, Shane Dawson’s 2020 apology and the James Charles–Tati Westbrook dispute stand out.
Calling an apology “worst” is a judgment about the response, not proof that every allegation surrounding it is true. The examples below distinguish documented events and attributed criticism from that judgment.
How this list defines “worst”
A useful way to assess a public apology is to ask whether it directly names the issue, acknowledges the people affected, accepts responsibility rather than deflecting, uses a tone and format suited to the seriousness of the subject, and explains what will change. These are editorial criteria, not a standardized score or a guarantee that an audience will forgive the speaker.
Academic studies offer ways to analyze apology videos, but neither establishes a universal winner. A 2024 University of Oulu thesis began with 32 videos and narrowed its sample to 15 for analysis; its categories were the researchers’ framework, not findings that every creator in those categories committed wrongdoing. A 2024 University of Jyväskylä thesis examined public apologies and responses, including the cases of Ballinger, Charles and Dawson. It reports that social media users in the material studied characterized Ballinger’s apology as the worst—a finding about that study’s sample, not public consensus everywhere.

1. Colleen Ballinger’s ukulele response
What happened
Ballinger posted her video on June 28, 2023, amid allegations made by former fans. In the song, she sang, “I’m not a groomer, I’m just a loser,” a lyric quoted by TIME. That line is her response; it does not independently establish or disprove the allegations.
Why the apology drew criticism
TIME reported that the video received more than 2 million views in less than 24 hours and that many critics felt the ukulele performance minimized the allegations. Gizmodo also described the video as widely mocked. The format became inseparable from the audience’s interpretation: a song could read as evasive or flippant when viewers expected direct engagement with serious claims.

That is a criticism of the response and its presentation, not a finding about the truth of the allegations. The distinction matters: a badly received apology cannot serve as proof of the underlying claims.
2. Logan Paul’s response to the Aokigahara footage
What happened
In 2018, Paul faced backlash after posting footage filmed in Japan’s Aokigahara forest that showed a deceased person. TIME’s reporting described criticism of both the video and his response. The subject calls for a respectful account rather than graphic detail.

Why the wording was criticized
TIME quoted Paul saying, “I’m sorry. This is a first for me. I’ve never faced criticism like this before, because I’ve never made a mistake like this before.” The sentence can be read as centering the creator’s experience of being criticized rather than the person shown or the people affected by the footage. That is an interpretation of the wording, not a claim about Paul’s intent.
In a crisis involving a death, an apology’s tone and focus are part of its substance. If viewers hear more about the speaker’s unfamiliarity with backlash than about the harm or people affected, the response risks deepening the original controversy.

3. Shane Dawson’s 2020 apology
What the reporting establishes
In June 2020, Dawson posted a lengthy apology for past offensive content, including blackface, according to The Washington Post. The paper also noted that he did not address a particular allegation in that apology. That point should remain attributed to the paper; it is not a basis for treating the allegation as established fact.
Why an apology can feel incomplete
Length alone does not demonstrate accountability. When an apology addresses some offensive material but leaves a particular issue unaddressed, readers may judge the response by what it omits as well as by what it says. In Dawson’s case, the documented combination of a lengthy statement and an omission illustrates why comprehensiveness and directness matter more than duration.

4. James Charles and Tati Westbrook’s “Bye Sister” dispute
Why it is harder to rank as one apology
This case is better understood as an evolving public dispute than as a single, neatly settled apology. TIME’s retrospective describes Westbrook’s “Bye Sister” video as a takedown of Charles and places it within creator and beauty-community conflict: “How One YouTube Video Changed the Course of Internet Culture”.
That context makes a simple verdict difficult. Later statements and reversals affect how any response should be assessed, and the documented account here does not support a detailed chronology of every claim. The case belongs on a list of apology controversies because public responses unfolded within a wider conflict—not because every allegation or counterclaim can be treated as settled.
What these videos show about public apologies
These examples are not an exhaustive ranking, and there is no verified comparative metric that proves which apology was objectively worst. Their common thread is that an apology’s reception depends on more than saying “sorry.” Viewers also judge whether the speaker names the issue plainly, recognizes those affected, takes responsibility and describes a credible next step. A performance, a self-focused explanation, or an omission can become the story alongside the original controversy.
Those criteria are a way to evaluate the response, not a formula for securing forgiveness. The sources document particular events and reported reactions; they do not establish a universal ranking or resolve every allegation associated with these creators.
