Spring 2024 brought new dramas, science fiction, thrillers, comedy and reality competition to TV and streaming. This retrospective shortlist highlights eight new series and limited-run shows worth considering, with their original platform, premiere timing and the kind of viewing they suit. It is a considered selection, not an exhaustive or objectively ranked list; the dates below are historical, not upcoming releases.
What were the best new TV shows to watch in spring 2024?
For a prestige drama, try The Sympathizer; for science fiction, 3 Body Problem; and for a post-apocalyptic adaptation, Fallout. The shortlist also includes the crime drama Sugar, the historical thriller The Big Cigar, Netflix thriller Eric, a short-run John Mulaney talk show and E!’s fashion competition OMG Fashun. These recommendations reflect different tastes and formats rather than a ranking based on ratings or viewership.
New dramas and science fiction
The Sympathizer — HBO
TV Guide included this HBO title among spring’s anticipated new shows. It is a strong shortlist choice if you want a new prestige drama. That is an editorial recommendation, not a claim about audience ratings. TV Guide’s spring TV guide places it in the season’s broader mix of broadcast, cable and streaming premieres.
3 Body Problem — Netflix
TV Guide identified 3 Body Problem as a new spring series and one of the season’s major streaming launches. It is the science-fiction pick in this group. The cited guide does not establish a rating or viewership figure, so the recommendation rests on its place among the season’s notable new releases rather than a numerical ranking. Fallout — Prime Video
TV Guide named Fallout among spring’s exciting new shows. Its April guide described it as a hit at that time; that is the publication’s time-specific characterization, not a current viewership statistic. For a post-apocalyptic series, it is one of the clearest picks in the shortlist. TV Guide’s guide.
Sugar — Apple TV+
TV Guide included Sugar among its anticipated new series. Apple’s February 5, 2024 announcement also listed it among the service’s new original programming for that year. The announcement establishes its place on Apple’s planned slate, not a critical verdict or present-day availability. TV Guide’s spring guide and Apple TV’s 2024 slate announcement.

May premieres: a historical thriller, a missing-child mystery and more
The Big Cigar — Apple TV+
This six-part series premiered May 17, 2024. It dramatizes Black Panther Party co-founder Huey P. Newton’s flight from the United States to Cuba in 1974. TIME TV critic Judy Berman called it “electrifying”; that is her critical assessment, not a measurable reception claim. TIME’s May 2024 picks.
Eric — Netflix
Netflix’s 2024 slate describes Eric as a thriller about a father searching for his missing son in 1980s New York, released May 30, 2024. TIME critic Judy Berman praised its ambition and originality while faulting tonal dissonance. That mix makes it a more useful pick for viewers open to an unusual, uneven thriller than for anyone seeking a straightforward mystery. Netflix’s 2024 slate and TIME’s May 2024 picks.

It suits viewers looking for topical comedy in a short event format rather than a conventional, continuing late-night franchise. TIME covered the series after its run; consult the publication’s May TV feature for its assessment.
OMG Fashun — E!
A fashion competition led by Julia Fox and Law Roach, OMG Fashun offers a reality-TV alternative to the scripted dramas on this list. TIME critic Judy Berman called the format fresh within its category; that is her view, not a claim about audience response. TIME’s May 2024 picks.

New series or returning season?
Not every spring premiere was a new show. TV Guide treated Interview with the Vampire and Evil as returning favorites, while Netflix scheduled Bridgerton season 3 in two parts: May 16 and June 13, 2024. Those are returning series, so they belong in a spring viewing guide but not in a list of brand-new shows. TV Guide’s seasonal guide and Netflix’s 2024 slate.
