The Woman in the Wall is a six-episode BBC mystery drama about Lorna Brady, a woman who wakes to find a corpse in her home while trying to uncover what happened to the daughter taken from her decades earlier. The fictional story draws on the history of Ireland’s Magdalene laundries, but it is not a documentary or a dramatization of one specific historical case.
What is The Woman in the Wall about?
Set in the fictional Irish town of Kilkinure, the series follows Lorna Brady, played by Ruth Wilson. Lorna has a history of sleepwalking. When she wakes beside a corpse, she cannot tell whether she was involved in the death.
As she tries to establish what happened, Lorna also searches for Agnes, the daughter taken from her after she gave birth as a teenager. Her memories lead back to the fictional Kilkinure Convent, where she was confined at age 15. Detective Colman Akande, played by Daryl McCormack, is investigating what appears to be a separate crime; his case eventually intersects with Lorna’s search. The result brings a murder mystery together with a family search and the long aftermath of institutional abuse.
Is The Woman in the Wall based on a true story?
No. Lorna, Agnes, Detective Akande, Kilkinure and its convent are fictional. The historical subject informing the drama is real: Magdalene laundries were church-run facilities for women and girls who were pregnant and unmarried or considered troubled, as described by the Associated Press. The series should be understood as fiction engaging with that history, not as a documentary record of a particular laundry or person.

Wilson, an actor and executive producer, told the Associated Press: “This is a really important story that needs to get out there. We need to keep making dramas or stories about this subject matter.” She also said: “Any religion or any sort of institution can be corrupted.” Those are Wilson’s views on the subject, rather than a claim that the series depicts a documented individual case.

The Associated Press reported that Sinéad O’Connor gave permission for “The Magdalene Song” to be used at the end of the finale. Wilson said composer David Holmes, who had worked with O’Connor, brought the song to the project. Its connection to the subject gives the closing music a direct historical resonance without turning the fictional story into a documentary account.
