The Who announced The Song Is Over: The North American Farewell Tour as a 2025 run across the United States and Canada. The dates are now historical: the band later named its October 1, 2025, concert at Acrisure Arena in Greater Palm Springs as the tour’s final public show. “Farewell” referred to this North American tour, not a confirmed end to all future activity.
What The Who announced
Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend unveiled the tour at a press conference in London. The band said the shows would draw on songs from across its catalogue, spanning six decades of music. The announced cities included Atlantic City, Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Newark, Philadelphia, Seattle, Toronto and Vancouver. The Who’s May 2025 announcement described the run as a final face-to-face celebration with fans in the United States and Canada.

The tour title comes from “The Song Is Over,” a song on The Who’s 1971 album Who’s Next. The Associated Press reported Townshend’s comment at the announcement: “Well, all good things must come to an end. It is a poignant time.” The AP’s May 8, 2025 coverage also reported that the band planned to perform songs from its six-decade career.
How the announced itinerary changed
The dates appeared in successive announcements, so the initial schedule and later version are not identical. The band’s May announcement began with an August 16, 2025, show at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida. A July itinerary update added a second Chicago date and listed a September 28 show in Las Vegas as the final stop at that point. On September 12, The Who announced an additional October 1 performance at Acrisure Arena in Greater Palm Springs, California, identifying it as the final public show on the North American tour.

The band’s updated itinerary and final-show notice record the announcements; those notices alone do not establish that every planned concert took place. The updated itinerary and the September 12 final-show notice are the relevant records for the later schedule.
Which guests were announced
The band named guest performers across the tour, with pairings varying by date. The announced guests included Billy Bob Thornton and The Boxmasters, The Joe Perry Project, Feist, Tom Cochrane, Joe Bonamassa, Leslie Mendelson, Candlebox and Billy Idol. These names should not be read as a lineup appearing at every show; consult the dated itinerary for a particular concert. The Who’s guest and VIP announcement lists the announced support acts.

What “farewell” meant—and what it did not establish
The band framed the event as a North American farewell tour. Its September notice called the October 1 Acrisure Arena concert “the last time on The Song is Over – The Final Public Show on the North American Farewell Tour!” That wording identifies the final public performance on this tour; it does not confirm that The Who retired permanently or played its final show anywhere in the world.
When the tour was announced in May 2025, Daltrey said there were no plans then for a UK farewell tour, while leaving the possibility open. That was a statement about the band’s plans at the time, not a guarantee about its later touring decisions. The AP reported the comment alongside its account of the announcement.

Ticket presales and VIP offers were time-limited
The original announcement said Citi cardmembers could access a U.S. presale beginning May 13, 2025, and that Wholigan Fan Club members could receive early ticket access. The fan-club offer also included exclusive merchandise and a copy of the previously unreleased The Who Live At The Oval 1971, newly mixed and mastered from original tapes. These were historical tour promotions, not current ticket or membership offers.
VIP packages varied by offer and could include premium tickets, preshow soundcheck access, an invitation to a VIP lounge and a limited-edition autographed tour poster. The band directed readers to VIP Nation for details at the time; the announcement does not establish that any package remains available.
