Officially titled The Song Is Over North America Farewell Tour, it was announced on 8 May 2025 as a final run across the United States and Canada. The name comes from the band’s 1971 song “The Song Is Over.”
What was “The Song Is Over”?
It was the title of The Who’s farewell tour of the United States and Canada. The band’s official announcement described the tour as its final one in North America and said the title came from its 1971 song “The Song Is Over.” The Associated Press report also connected the title to the song.

Why did the project sound mysterious at first?
Before the band explained the announcement, a Rolling Stone report published on 8 May 2025 said Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey were gathering the press in London for a special announcement called “The Song Is Over.” At that point, the band had not said what the project was; a farewell tour was only a plausible interpretation. The Who’s announcement later that day confirmed it was a North American farewell tour.
What did “farewell” mean?
The announcement covered the United States and Canada, not a worldwide retirement. The band had not announced a UK farewell tour in May 2025. The Associated Press reported Daltrey saying, “Let’s see if we survive this one,” while leaving the possibility open without promising it. That was his comment at the time, not a statement that rules out any later plans.

How the tour concluded
The initial schedule ran from Sunrise, Florida, on 16 August 2025 to Las Vegas on 28 September. The Who later announced a 1 October 2025 date at Acrisure Arena in Greater Palm Springs, California, identifying it as the tour’s final public show in its official news index.

In the band’s 8 May 2025 announcement, guitarist and songwriter Pete Townshend said, “Well, all good things must come to an end. It is a poignant time.” Singer Roger Daltrey said, “It’s not easy to end the big part of my life that touring with The Who has been.” Their statements addressed the end of this touring chapter in North America; they do not, by themselves, establish a broader retirement from all performance.
