Spoilers for season 3, episode 1. “Same Spirits, New Forms” opens with gunshots interrupting a meditation session and a body in the water, then rewinds a week to introduce the guests and staff at the White Lotus in Thailand. The result is a deliberate slow-burn premiere: its violent frame promises a mystery, while its main business is setting wealthy visitors, service workers and spiritual imagery into uneasy proximity.

How the premiere’s time jump works

The cold open follows Zion (Nicholas Duvernay) at the resort wellness center. Gunshots break the quiet. Afraid for his mother, Belinda, he hides in the water and sees a body. The episode then moves back one week, postponing the answers to that opening and shifting attention to the people who will occupy the resort.

That structure supplies an immediate question—what happened at the resort?—but not a conventional mystery plot that keeps advancing in every scene. Much of the premiere is an ensemble introduction, and the suspense comes from knowing that the holiday we are watching will eventually reach the violence in the prologue. The hook is effective; the wait for it to matter is part of the episode’s design.

Who arrives at the Thailand resort

The Ratliffs

Businessman Timothy Ratliff (Jason Isaacs) is on holiday with his wife, Victoria (Parker Posey), and their children: Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger), Piper (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lochlan (Sam Nivola). Their family dynamic gives the premiere one of its central social units, with different generations and priorities sharing the same luxury setting.

Three longtime friends

Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan), Laurie (Carrie Coon) and Kate (Leslie Bibb) arrive as friends whose history gives their conversations a different texture from a group of strangers meeting on vacation. The episode begins sketching the distance between how people present themselves together and what may be going on beneath that ease.

Rick and Chelsea

Rick (Walton Goggins) is at the resort with his younger girlfriend, Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood). Their pairing introduces another contrast in age, outlook and the way two people can experience the same trip differently.

Belinda and the resort workers

Belinda (Natasha Rothwell), returning from season 1, is at the Thailand resort with her son Zion. She is interested in learning about the property’s wellness practices. The premiere also introduces Mook (Lalisa Manobal), Gaitok (Tayme Thapthimthong) and other wellness staff, whose work gives the resort’s spiritual atmosphere a human context beyond the guests’ holiday experience.

Late in the episode, Greg Hunt (Jon Gries) appears. His arrival is a significant connection to earlier seasons, but the premiere leaves the meaning of that return as a reveal rather than resolving it.

Spirituality, luxury and the resort’s point of view

The episode’s most compelling tension is between spiritual imagery and the way wealthy visitors encounter wellness as part of a luxury stay. In the opening, Zion’s fear, his prayers to Jesus and a nearby Buddha statue make the spiritual setting feel vulnerable and immediate. Later, the resort’s wellness offerings belong to a carefully managed guest experience. The contrast invites a question about what spirituality means in a place built to sell comfort, without making the premiere’s answer definitive.

This fits the show’s established interest in the manners and power dynamics of luxury tourism: guests consume the setting, while workers make the experience possible. Season-level commentary has framed this installment around spirituality and death—Forbes has contrasted season 1’s emphasis on wealth and season 2’s on sex with season 3’s spiritual focus, while W Magazine has described the death-and-Eastern-spirituality framing as creator Mike White’s. Those are thematic lenses for the season, not a complete explanation of this episode.

Does the slow-burn setup pay off?

As a premiere, “Same Spirits, New Forms” is more interested in assembling its social world than delivering a steady stream of plot turns. The prologue establishes a clear threat, but the rewind gives the episode room to lay out relationships, status and the resort’s labor. That makes the pacing a matter of expectation: viewers looking for the opening’s mystery to drive every scene may find the middle patient, while viewers drawn to character observation have more to study.

Critical response has reflected that split rather than a single consensus. Rotten Tomatoes’ episode page displayed a 100% Tomatometer based on 11 reviews on October 8, 2026; that is a dated critics’ snapshot, not an audience score or a permanent rating. On the same page, IndieWire’s Proma Khosla gave the episode an A- and praised its ensemble introduction, while Esquire’s Josh Rosenberg and The Ringer’s Ben Lindbergh raised concerns about the slow start. The divided emphasis captures the premiere’s trade-off: atmosphere and character setup come before momentum.

Verdict

“Same Spirits, New Forms” is a strong, intentionally unhurried setup. Its opening gives the season a sharp note of danger; its rewind makes room for a new ensemble and a pointed contrast between spiritual practice and luxury consumption. The premiere does not yet turn its mystery into momentum, but it establishes enough tension, character friction and thematic possibility to make the slow approach feel purposeful.
