What happens in “El Sacrificio”
The episode’s plot divides Daryl and Carol between two urgent but conflicting priorities: finding a route out of Spain and confronting the peril facing people in Solaz del Mar. Daryl’s boat plan comes with a price
Guillermo believes life in Solaz was stable before the Americans arrived. He links Daryl and Carol’s presence to missing men and to residents beginning to question him; Fede also recognizes that their arrival has coincided with trouble.
Daryl’s focus is practical: get a boat working and leave. An older sea captain agrees to repair it in exchange for five kilos of gunpowder. Roberto offers to help, but wants to bring Justina with them. Daryl is initially reluctant. Valentina also offers him additional supplies.

Before leaving, Daryl places one of Laurent’s toys at a statue of a saint where people leave objects for loved ones. It is a quiet gesture amid his effort to get moving again.
A search for a rudder brings a walker attack
Daryl and Roberto try to retrieve a spare rudder from a shipwreck. Walkers emerge from the water and besiege them, turning the salvage mission into a fight for survival. The attack also puts the boat-repair plan at risk: Daryl needs the rudder, but getting it is not a straightforward job.

Carol is drawn into Solaz’s crisis
While Daryl works on the boat, Carol remains in Solaz. She spends time with Antonio, whose home cinema and collection of classic films offer a rare pause from the settlement’s dangers. But she cannot accept Alba’s fate in the lottery. Justina shares the sense that she bears responsibility for what is happening.
Why Justina’s decision is the episode’s cliffhanger
Carol and Antonio begin to understand what may be unfolding, but they arrive too late to stop Justina from offering herself in Alba’s place. The episode ends with the consequences unresolved.

That choice puts Carol at a crossroads. She appears likely to intervene, even though stepping in could endanger Solaz and deepen the divide with Daryl, who is trying to get them out of Spain. The cliffhanger is not simply whether Carol can help Justina; it is whether she can walk away from a community in danger when doing so may be the safer choice for her and Daryl.
How the episode separates Daryl and Carol’s priorities
Season 3’s broader setup gives this split added context. In an AMC Talk interview published September 10, 2025, Melissa McBride describes the characters taking separate missions and learning about themselves apart from each other. Speaking about Carol’s outlook after the tunnel experience—not specifically about Episode 3—she calls it “a strange kind of hopeful feeling.”

In “El Sacrificio,” that separation becomes a direct conflict in purpose: Daryl is pursuing an exit, while Carol is pulled toward the people and danger in front of her. The episode’s closing choice puts that difference under pressure.
