Why De Melo said he was honoured to represent WA
In PerthNow’s 26 October 2024 preview, De Melo said support from people in Perth and across Western Australia had made the experience feel bigger than his own progress in the competition. “I feel kind of honoured to be representing WA because of that,” he told the publication. He also told PerthNow he had not expected to make it so far, given the other contestants’ talent and his work returning from the mines. He said his wife, Olivia, had signed him up for the show and that he wanted to make her proud. These are De Melo’s recollections as reported in the interview.
Who was Reuben De Melo on The Voice?
PerthNow described De Melo as a 32-year-old Perth father of three and FIFO worker. He entered the 2024 competition with a blind audition of Ed Sheeran’s “I See Fire.” The performance impressed the coaches, and coach LeAnn Rimes used her Ultimate Block to secure him for her team, according to the contemporaneous report.

De Melo reached the grand final alongside Annie Jones, Jaedyn Randall and SKYE. The reports establish their finalist and coach context, but do not provide a basis for ranking their voices or artistic merit.
The personal story behind his music
PerthNow reported that De Melo traced his serious commitment to music to 2012, after his friend Josh Henderson died at 21 following a bump during a football game. Henderson’s mother asked De Melo to sing at the wake. De Melo said that experience gave his music a deeper purpose, and that he later began writing original songs and performing locally. The account comes from De Melo as told to PerthNow.

How De Melo won the 2024 grand final
On 27 October 2024, De Melo won The Voice Australia. PerthNow’s winner report says he performed The Animals’ “House of the Rising Sun” in the finale and also sang “Fix You” with Rimes. After the result, he said: “I never thought I’d get this far. This is crazy.”
The prize descriptions differ slightly between the contemporaneous reports. PerthNow’s preview described a $100,000 cash prize and an all-inclusive recording package; its winner report described $100,000 plus a music masterclass and an industry recording development package. The reports do not establish that those package descriptions mean precisely the same thing.
