The Truth Behind the Legend of Krampus: Austria’s Alpine Winter Tradition

Krampus accompanies Saint Nicholas in Alpine winter customs, but Austrian processions and plays vary by region—and the figure’s exact origins remain uncertain.

Krampus is a horned figure in Central and Eastern Alpine folklore who appears alongside Saint Nicholas on the evening of December 5, the eve of Saint Nicholas Day. He is commonly cast as the frightening counterpart to the saint’s gift-giving, but the custom is not uniform across Austria—and Krampus’s precise historical origins remain uncertain.

Who is Krampus, and why does he accompany Saint Nicholas?

In the familiar version of the custom, Saint Nicholas rewards well-behaved children while Krampus represents punishment or mischief for those who have misbehaved. Accounts describe Krampus carrying birch switches and wearing chains and bells; the contrast gives the winter visit both a reassuring and a frightening side. Austria Travel describes this pairing as part of Central and Eastern Alpine folklore, with appearances on December 5, before the saint’s feast day on December 6. Austria Travel’s account of Krampus and the Austrian foreign ministry’s overview of December folk customs place the appearances and processions in that seasonal setting.

The pairing is a useful way to understand the legend, not a rule that every Austrian village follows in exactly the same way. Local events differ in their masks, actions and meaning, and some related customs take the form of a staged play rather than a street procession.

Is Krampus pagan, and what is known about his origins?

Krampus’s exact origins have not been established. Austria Tourism describes them as largely mysterious and presents connections to older winter customs as possibilities, not proven historical lineage. Karl C. Berger, identified by Tirol tourism as head of the Tyrolean Folk Art Museum, puts the matter succinctly: “Die Ursprünge sind komplex” (“The origins are complex”). Austria Tourism’s account of winter traditions and Tirol tourism’s discussion of devils, Krampuses and Perchten support caution rather than a single definitive origin story.

It is therefore misleading to state as settled fact that Krampus is an ancient pagan or Celtic survival. One proposed reference to fur-clad revelers in writing attributed to Augustine around 400 AD does not, on its own, document the figure of Krampus in that period. The evidence supports a distinction between later folklore about possible roots and a verified record of the character.

What happens at an Austrian Krampuslauf?

A Krampuslauf is a local procession in which masked figures move through a town or village. Austrian Travel describes costumes with carved wooden masks and sheepskin, while Austria’s foreign ministry notes that some December processions combine Saint Nicholas with masked figures. Bells, chains, horns and animal furs are among the features associated with the tradition, but the precise appearance and behavior vary by place. A Krampuslauf is best understood as a family of local events, not one standardized national performance.

Gastein Valley: one regional example

In its account of the Gastein Valley, Austria Tourism describes around 100 groups, known locally as “Passen.” Their masks are carved from Swiss stone pine, and the account identifies goat and ram furs. It also describes “Rempeln,” shoulder-wrestling among the figures, and a local interpretation in which Krampus drives evil away rather than embodies it. These details belong to that regional account; they should not be assumed to describe every Austrian procession. Austria Tourism’s description of Gastein Valley traditions gives the specific example.

Are all Krampus customs processions?

No. Austrian winter customs also include local plays with their own settings and histories. The Austrian Commission for UNESCO records the Öblarner Krampusspiel as a Styrian religious folk-theatre tradition performed in early December, including in farmhouse parlours and on the market square. Its inventory says the scripts were first put to paper in the 1980s and that the lines were recorded in 1989 through field research. This staged play is distinct from a generic street procession. The UNESCO Commission’s Öblarner Krampusspiel entry documents the local form.

The Commission also records the Bad Mitterndorf Saint Nicholas Play as an annual event on December 5, alongside surrounding seasonal customs including “Kramperl gehen.” These examples show how Nicholas-related plays and Krampus customs can sit within a wider local calendar without being interchangeable. The Bad Mitterndorf entry describes that community’s practice.

What does Krampus mean to people today?

The figure remains culturally ambivalent. A Vienna Museum article by Susanne Breuss, published December 3, 2020, describes criticism of Krampus as an expression of “black pedagogy” and outdated masculinity, alongside interpretations of the figure as a symbol for socially repressed or taboo subjects. Those are perspectives discussed by the museum, not evidence that all Austrians share one view. Breuss’s Vienna Museum article explores that tension.
