What happens at the end of Sinners?
The horror unfolds on the opening night of the twins’ juke joint in 1932 Mississippi. Sammie, a gifted young blues musician, draws the vampires with his playing; music is not just atmosphere in the film, but a force that connects people and attracts danger. The Associated Press describes the film’s setting and premise in its review, while The Atlantic discusses the music’s significance in its interview with Ryan Coogler.

During the final confrontation, Smoke appears to kill Stack. The credits later reveal that this apparent victory was a deception: Smoke spared Stack and Mary, who remain vampires. Before letting them leave, Smoke secured Stack’s promise not to harm Sammie. The bargain protects Sammie from the immediate threat, but it cannot save Smoke from what comes next.
After the vampire attack, Smoke and Sammie make it through the night. Smoke is mortally wounded, and the violence continues the following morning when he confronts the Klan. He dies there, closing his story in a world where human violence remains as deadly as the supernatural threat. The Guardian discusses this ending and its possible meanings in its spoiler discussion.

Does Smoke die, and is Stack still alive?
Smoke dies after the siege
Yes. Smoke survives the vampire siege but is mortally wounded. His death comes in the renewed human violence outside the club the next morning, not in the showdown where he seems to kill Stack.
Stack and Mary survive
Yes. Smoke secretly spares them, and they leave after Stack agrees not to hurt Sammie. The mid-credits scene makes clear that Smoke’s apparent killing of Stack was not the end of Stack’s story. TIME’s ending and credits breakdown details the reveal.
What do the credits scenes reveal about Sammie?
The mid-credits scene: a life built around music
Decades later, Sammie has established himself as a musician. Stack and Mary find him and offer to turn him into a vampire. He refuses. The conversation looks back on the juke joint night as a brief moment of freedom and joy before the bloodshed.
Sammie’s refusal is not a defeat or a failure to escape death. He chooses to remain human rather than accept the endless physical survival Stack and Mary represent. The film does not spell out one definitive reason for his decision, so it is best understood through what the scene places side by side: immortality with the vampires, and a finite life in which Sammie’s music can endure.
The final post-credits image: the music continues
After the remaining credits, the film returns to young Sammie playing “This Little Light of Mine.” The song carries Christian associations and has also been connected with civil-rights movements; those contexts deepen the image without fixing it to a single interpretation. The Guardian notes those associations in its discussion of the film.

Why does Sammie refuse to become a vampire?
The offer would preserve Sammie’s body, but his refusal suggests that physical survival is not the only kind of permanence that matters to him. His life as a musician gives his influence a different route through time. Stack and Mary endure as vampires; Sammie chooses a human life and the possibility that his art will reach people beyond his own lifetime.
That reading is supported by Coogler’s comments about the role of music, though it should not be mistaken for a single, officially declared moral. In The Atlantic, Coogler said the musical sequence helped him express “the monumental importance of what these people are doing and how it would reach through time.” He also explained, “The vampires were always there, because so much music deals with the supernatural.” Read the full interview with Coogler.
What the ending may mean: survival, freedom, and legacy
The ending gives the characters different forms of survival. Stack and Mary live on physically, but Sammie rejects their version of permanence. His music, meanwhile, can connect people across generations. The juke joint matters because it briefly gives the characters a space of their own—a place for community, pleasure, and music before violence destroys it.
The Guardian reads the ending as linking community and loss with different kinds of legacy. That is a critical interpretation, not a definitive explanation from Coogler. The film’s final images can also invite readings about faith, the blues, freedom, and the cost of survival; the credits scenes leave room for those ideas to coexist rather than settling on one fixed lesson.
