Those are her recollections, shared in her memoir Finding Me and interviews—not a clinical label or a claim that hardship alone explains her later success.
What was Viola Davis’s childhood like?
Davis has said her family moved to Central Falls when she was two or three months old. In a BAFTA interview, she recalled spending most of her childhood in condemned buildings infested with rats, with plumbing that did not work, almost no hot water and no family phone. Her BAFTA interview transcript preserves her description: “Almost never did we have hot water, plumbing never worked, never had a phone. That was really the most, 99.9 percent of my childhood.” The 99.9 percent is her own emphatic recollection, not an independently measured statistic.
In a 2022 interview with Rhode Island Monthly, Davis also described food insecurity and utilities being shut off. She said the family’s public-assistance check allowed a monthly grocery trip, but the food did not last. “We never had any food. After the public assistance check came every month, we would do our grocery run. There was never enough food to last to the end of the month. How did poverty and family life affect her?
Davis has spoken about living with an alcoholic parent, family violence and sexual abuse. ABC News reported her account that she witnessed her father physically abuse her mother and experienced sexual abuse herself. These are sensitive personal disclosures, and the available accounts do not warrant adding details beyond what Davis has shared or diagnosing any family member.

She has described shame not only about poverty and violence, but also about bed-wetting and feeling that she had to be perfect. Speaking to The View, as reported by ABC News, Davis said: “Shame for the poverty, shame for the violence, shame for being a bedwetter, shame for not being perfect. I felt completely isolated, because I was growing up in a predominantly white community that I felt spit me out.” ABC News reported her account.
What has Davis said about racism, bullying and isolation?
Davis has described being bullied as a Black child in a predominantly white community and feeling she lacked support in understanding what it meant to be Black and dark-skinned. Netflix’s 2022 account of Oprah + Viola recounts her memory of boys chasing her, throwing rocks and calling her ugly. The account places those experiences alongside the hunger and cold she remembers from Central Falls; it does not reduce her childhood to a single cause or incident.

Davis told Oprah Winfrey that she decided to pursue acting at 14: “Fourteen was the age I decided that I was going to be an actress.” Netflix’s summary of the conversation describes acting as a way she could imagine a future beyond her immediate circumstances. That is different from saying acting rescued her or that trauma is a prerequisite for achievement.
Why did Viola Davis write Finding Me?
Davis’s memoir, Finding Me: A Memoir, is the book-length first-person account of her life. HarperOne published it on April 26, 2022. In discussing the book, Davis has said she wanted to challenge the tendency to minimize sexual abuse and to give others permission and courage to tell their stories. That is her stated purpose for writing; readers’ responses will differ.

The memoir gives Davis space to connect the material conditions of her childhood with the shame and isolation she recalls, and with the way she came to understand and express herself.
