Yes. A live-action Voltron movie moved into casting in 2024, and producer Bob Koplar said production had wrapped by 2025. Hasbro was still describing the film as upcoming in a February 2026 merchandise announcement. The cast and creative team are now partly confirmed, but the official sources reviewed here do not establish a release date or distribution platform.
How the movie moved from casting to production
On October 2, 2024, io9 reported that Daniel Quinn-Toye had been cast as the male lead, with casting for the female lead still underway. The report said filming was expected to begin in Australia that fall. On October 10, io9 reported that Henry Cavill had joined the film.

Those early reports established that casting was underway; they did not confirm character assignments for the actors. A 2025 GeekTyrant report relayed producer Bob Koplar’s statement that the live-action film had officially wrapped production. That marks a later stage than the casting news, but a production wrap is not a release announcement.
Who is in the live-action Voltron movie?
Hasbro’s February 4, 2026 announcement names Henry Cavill, Daniel Quinn-Toye, Sterling K. Brown, Alba Baptista and Rita Ora among the cast, along with other performers. It identifies Rawson Marshall Thurber as director and story writer; Ellen Shanman and Thurber are credited with the screenplay.

The cast announcement does not, in the material cited here, provide confirmed character assignments. In particular, the October 2024 casting stories’ descriptions of lead roles should not be treated as confirmation of which Voltron characters the actors will play.
What is the film about?
The familiar Voltron premise centers on five pilots who combine their vehicles to form a giant robot. The franchise’s best-known syndicated series, Voltron: Defender of the Universe, arrived in the mid-1980s and was edited and dubbed from the Japanese animated series Beast King GoLion and Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV, as io9’s October 2024 coverage recounts.

- Combines with the other legendary lions to form a 16" Voltron!
- Includes missile firing projectile launcher!
- Includes jaw blade and beam emitter!
- Her Royal Highness, Princess Allura of planet Arus, became pilot of the Blue Lion, the right leg of Voltron!
The available sources describe the new movie as a Voltron adaptation. They do not establish that it continues the Netflix series Voltron: Legendary Defender, so viewers should not assume the live-action film shares that series’ continuity.
When will the Voltron movie come out, and where will it be released?
No release date or final distribution platform is confirmed in the official sources reviewed here. Amazon MGM Studios’ CinemaCon slate announcement lists other theatrical films planned for 2026 and beyond but does not name Voltron. That omission does not prove the movie will be a streaming release, nor does it establish that no date has been announced elsewhere.

GeekTyrant’s 2025 production-wrap report said a release date and platform had not been announced at that time. It also relayed an update from the official Voltron account saying that fans would hear there when official launch plans were set. That was the status expressed in the 2025 report; it should not be mistaken for a current platform confirmation.

Hasbro and Amazon MGM Studios announced a collaboration on movie-inspired merchandise on February 4, 2026. The announced categories are action figures, toys and roleplay products. The announcement does not specify individual products, prices, release timing, retailers or Amazon listings, so the existence of the partnership does not mean that particular items are already available to buy.
