The Ultimate Road Trip Playlist: Travelers, Editors, and Spotify

The best road trip playlist depends on who is choosing: travelers, editors, or Spotify. Compare their picks and build a sequence for your drive.

There is no single, objectively ultimate road trip playlist. A useful one blends songs travelers repeatedly add to driving playlists, editor-picked classics, and Spotify’s own curated selections—then arranges them to fit the changing mood of a drive. Here’s what those sources can tell you, and a practical way to put them together.

What counts as the “best” road trip song?

“Best” can mean a song that many listeners add to driving playlists, a track an editor believes belongs on the open road, or a selection chosen by Spotify’s playlist team. Those are different kinds of evidence, not competing measurements of one universal preference.

For example, Spotify said in 2019 that it had found more than 2 million U.S. user-created playlists with “road trip” in the title. In the same August 2019 report, it said U.S. streaming of road-trip playlists was more than 40% higher during summer months. These are historical figures from Spotify’s report—not current totals or a global measure of listening.

Spotify also described identifying songs that appeared frequently in users’ road-trip playlists and mapping them against listeners’ states while creating a cross-country road-trip feature. That approach reflects listener-created playlists, but it does not mean there is a single definitive ranking of the songs people play on every journey. Spotify’s 2019 account explains the analysis.

What travelers’ playlists put on repeat

A separate analysis reported in 2026 offers a more recent snapshot of playlist appearances. According to Travelers Today’s account of a Blacklane study, researchers used Playlist Miner to examine 48,903 public Spotify playlists tagged “road trip” or “driving.” The study ranked songs by how often they appeared across those playlists.

In that reported ranking, “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers placed first, followed by “Stick Season” by Noah Kahan, “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield, and “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC. These are findings from that particular 2026 playlist scan, not a live Spotify chart or a survey of what people actually listened to for the longest time. A song’s frequency across playlists measures appearances, not streams or listening time.

What Spotify’s own playlists and trends add

Spotify’s own reporting offers another lens. In 2021, the company said U.S. streams of its Family Road Trip playlist had grown 77% over the prior three months, while global streams of Pop Drive had grown 51% over the same period. These were campaign-period increases, not current listening statistics. Spotify also named “Mr. Brightside” the top song added to user-generated road-trip playlists in that report. Spotify’s 2021 summer road-trip report provides that context.

For a ready-made platform-curated starting point, see Spotify’s Road Trip playlist. Playlist contents and ordering can change, so check the live page rather than relying on a remembered track list. Spotify’s playlist is one editorial choice, not a claim that its sequence works for every car, route, or group.

What editors choose for the open road

Editorial lists offer a different kind of recommendation: a human selection shaped by musical taste, era, and the feeling of a journey. Far Out Magazine describes its collection as “The 40 best road trip songs” and presents it as 40 classic on-the-road tracks. Examples surfaced on its playlist page include “American Girl” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac, “Life’s a Gas” by T. Rex, “Young Folks” by Peter Bjorn and John, and “Caravan” by Van Morrison.

Those titles show the collection’s range, rather than establishing a definitive ranking. The playlist’s songs and sequence may change; consult Far Out Magazine’s Spotify playlist for its current version.

Build a playlist that changes with the drive

In a 2023 Spotify interview, creator Antoni Bumba described the passenger’s role as helping shape the shared mood: “If the person driving the car is getting us from point A to point B, then the passenger princess is making sure we’re all having a good time.” Her approach is a personal sequencing idea, not a scientifically established formula—but it offers a useful structure for a playlist that should carry people through more than one stretch of highway.

  1. Open with accessible, feel-good songs. Bumba suggests starting with Motown or similarly upbeat music to ease everyone into the trip.
  2. Move into familiar sing-alongs. Recognizable choruses give passengers a reason to join in; choose songs your group actually knows rather than assuming one taste fits all.
  3. Leave room for conversation. Put lower-pressure or “filler” tracks between big moments, so the playlist can keep playing without demanding everyone’s attention.
  4. Shift the energy for the view. Bumba recommends lyrical music that is not overly emotional, then instrumental tracks for quieter stretches when passengers want to look out the window.
  5. Choose an arrival song. Save a track that suits reaching the destination, whether that means a triumphant chorus or a calmer landing.

Bumba’s advice also gets at the practical side of passenger-DJ duty: “You have to have what’s gonna play next figured out, because if everyone in the car gets mad at you and wants to take the aux from you, they’re never gonna trust you again.” Her sequence and examples are personal; treat them as a prompt to plan transitions, not a rulebook. Spotify’s 2023 interview with Bumba shares her full perspective.

Make the music work with your car setup

Spotify identifies AUX cable, Bluetooth, and vehicle dashboards as ways to connect music in a car. Which option works depends on the vehicle and the equipment already installed. If your car has an AUX input but no built-in Bluetooth, an AUX Bluetooth adapter may be an option; check compatibility with your specific vehicle before buying one. Otherwise, use the connection route your car supports.

How to use these lists without treating them as a ranking

Each source answers a different question. Listener-created playlist scans show what users include; Spotify’s reports describe platform-specific playlist activity during named periods; an editor’s collection expresses a curated musical point of view. Stream growth, song appearances, and editorial selection cannot be compared as though they measure the same thing.

A practical road trip playlist can draw from all three: use the 2026 reported frequency findings to find familiar anchors, browse an editor’s selections for older or less obvious discoveries, and sample Spotify’s live Road Trip playlist for platform-curated picks. Then sequence the tracks around your passengers, the mood of the route, and the car’s connection options.
