A May 2021 report said Shuma-Gorath might be the main antagonist of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, with America Chavez reportedly in his sights. The claim was attributed to The Illuminerdi, not announced by Marvel, and BGR said it could not confirm the leak at the time.
Which MCU film did the headline mean?
The headline referred to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In a May 19, 2021 article, BGR’s Chris Smith relayed a rumor from The Illuminerdi that Shuma-Gorath would be the film’s primary antagonist and would target America Chavez. BGR presented it as an unverified report, not a confirmed plot detail. BGR’s original report

What did the Shuma-Gorath rumor claim?
According to BGR’s account of The Illuminerdi report, Shuma-Gorath was allegedly the main villain, and the rumor connected his role to America Chavez. The report available here does not establish further plot details or explain the alleged motive beyond that connection.
BGR explicitly cautioned that there was no way to confirm the leak at publication. That uncertainty matters: the claim was circulating in entertainment reporting, but it was not an official Marvel reveal.

What did Marvel officially establish?
Marvel’s official film page identifies the movie, names Sam Raimi as director and lists its principal cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Xochitl Gomez. It gives the US theatrical release date as May 6, 2022. The page does not identify Shuma-Gorath as the antagonist.
Marvel’s character pages offer context, not confirmation of the leak. The Scarlet Witch page identifies Wanda Maximoff as Scarlet Witch and links her to the film; that association alone does not establish that she is a villain. Marvel’s Shuma-Gorath page describes him as an ancient extra-dimensional comics entity, but his comics background does not prove he appeared as the movie’s antagonist.

No. The available evidence supports describing Shuma-Gorath as the villain named in a 2021 rumor, not as a villain Marvel officially confirmed at that time. BGR’s article attributed the claim to The Illuminerdi and stated that it could not verify the leak; the Marvel pages reviewed provide film and character information but do not confirm that claim.
