In a 2021 appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, Mark Calaway, the wrestler known as The Undertaker, referred to having used steroids in the past: “I don’t know how they did it, I couldn’t get that way when I was on steroids.” His remark establishes his own statement of past use, but gives no details about when, how often, which substances, or whether there was a medical context.
What Calaway said about steroid use
Calaway made the remark while discussing the size and physiques of other wrestlers. The interview is episode 1598 of The Joe Rogan Experience, released in January 2021. Listen to the episode on Spotify; Wrestling Inc.’s contemporaneous coverage transcribes the statement.
The wording is a first-person reference to past steroid use. It does not identify a date, duration, frequency, specific drug, prescription, or other medical circumstances. Those details cannot be inferred from the quote.
What he said about WWE testing
In the same interview, Calaway described testing he said he underwent under a regular WWE contract: “Under a regular contract you have to have 4 mandatory piss tests and two blood tests every year.” This is his account of his own contract experience at the time, not independent confirmation of a rule for every performer or of WWE’s current policy. Wrestling Inc. reports the testing remarks.

- Ride into matches with real rolling wheels.
His description of testing does not establish his individual test results, whether he ever failed a test, or whether his use violated a policy. The interview account supplies none of that information.

A 2020 Guardian profile characterized Calaway as having steered clear of steroid scandals. That profile appeared before his 2021 statement; its broad description of his public association with scandals is not evidence that he had never used steroids. Read the Guardian profile.

- WWE Toy Wrestling Action Figure
A 2009 report prepared for the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform addressed WWE’s testing practices, positive tests, and therapeutic-use exemptions. Those organization-level findings provide historical context but do not document Calaway’s personal testing or establish his individual history. Read the committee report.
