What is Lewy body dementia?
Lewy body dementia (LBD) is associated with abnormal deposits of the protein alpha-synuclein in the brain. It is an umbrella term that includes dementia with Lewy bodies and Parkinson’s disease dementia. The timing of cognitive and movement symptoms helps clinicians distinguish these related diagnoses. National Institute on Aging National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke
Symptoms vary
LBD can affect thinking, movement, mood, behavior, sleep, and other body functions. Possible symptoms include changes in attention or thinking, Parkinson’s-like movement problems, hallucinations or mood changes, REM sleep behavior disorder, and autonomic problems. A person may not have every symptom, and symptoms can emerge in different patterns. These general features should not be taken as a description of Volman’s experience; the available account does not specify his symptoms. How clinicians assess LBD
Early signs can resemble those of other brain or psychiatric disorders, so assessment can be challenging. Clinicians may consider medical history, physical and neurological examinations, cognitive testing, and tests or imaging that help rule out other causes or support parts of the assessment. The National Institute on Aging states: “No single brain scan or medical test can definitively diagnose LBD.” The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke notes that diagnosis may take multiple visits; neurologists specializing in cognitive or behavioral neurology or movement disorders may have relevant expertise. Course and care
LBD is progressive and has no cure, though some symptoms may respond to treatment and management. Responses vary. That general information does not establish Volman’s treatment or prognosis. Anyone concerned about symptoms should seek an individual assessment from a clinician. National Institute on Aging National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke

Where can families find reliable LBD information?
The Lewy Body Dementia Association offers a symptom checklist for patients and clinicians and lists its Lewy Line at 800.539.9767. A checklist can help someone organize questions for a clinical appointment, but it cannot diagnose LBD. Lewy Body Dementia Association
For caregivers, the National Institute on Aging advises telling hospital staff when a person has LBD and describing medication sensitivities. It also recommends asking whether the person’s neurologist can be consulted before medication is given to control behavior changes or other LBD-related symptoms.
