Lucy Liu, Geena Davis, Richard Dreyfuss and others have described upsetting or difficult encounters. In 2022, production on Being Mortal was suspended after a complaint involving Murray; he called the incident a difference of opinion and said he had thought his behavior was funny. Later reporting described the complainant’s allegation and a reported settlement. These accounts help explain the reputation, but they do not prove that every account is identical or that the label applies universally.
Why did Bill Murray acquire a reputation for being mean?
The reputation grew from public stories told by people who worked with Murray, including actors and a producer. They describe different incidents on different productions, from alleged insults and yelling to a complaint that halted a film’s production. Because the accounts vary in date, source and nature, they should be read individually rather than treated as one independently verified record.
There is no named statistic in the available reporting that measures how widespread the reputation is or how often Murray behaved in the ways described. The number of published accounts is not a measure of how common such interactions were among his colleagues.
What did Lucy Liu say happened on Charlie’s Angels?
Liu recalled an incident during rehearsal for the 2000 film Charlie’s Angels. In a 2021 podcast interview, she said Murray hurled insults at her after a scene had been rewritten. The Los Angeles Times reported that Liu called the language unacceptable and said she stood up for herself: “Some of the language was inexcusable and unacceptable, and I was not going to just sit there and take it.” The same report noted Liu said Murray had been perfectly nice to her since the incident. The Los Angeles Times’ account attributes the recollection to Liu; it does not establish a broader pattern across every interaction between them.

What did Geena Davis recall about Quick Change?
In her memoir Dying of Politeness, Davis recounted alleged treatment during the making of Quick Change, their 1990 film. As quoted in the Los Angeles Times, Davis described a first meeting involving a massage device and an episode in which Murray yelled at her on set. She wrote: “There were easily more than 300 people there — and Murray was still screaming at me, for all to see and hear.” The crowd figure is Davis’s recollection of that moment, not an independently established count or a statistic about Murray’s conduct.
These details are Davis’s own account as reported by the Los Angeles Times. They should not be presented as findings made by an independent investigation.
What other collaborators have described
Other reports add accounts from people associated with Murray’s films. The Los Angeles Times’ 2022 roundup included producer Laura Ziskin’s recollection of threats and broken sunglasses, and Richard Dreyfuss’s description of an alleged confrontation during What About Bob? The Washington Post later reported accounts from Rob Schneider and Seth Green, as well as repeating Liu’s and Davis’s stories. These are distinct recollections with differing sourcing and context, not a single adjudicated set of events.
For that reason, the accounts explain why the reputation persists without establishing that every story has been independently corroborated, resolved in court or representative of how Murray treated all coworkers. The Washington Post’s roundup identifies the speakers behind its accounts.

In April 2022, production on Being Mortal was suspended after a complaint involving Murray. In a contemporaneous interview with CNBC, Murray said he and a woman coworker had a “difference of opinion” and explained: “I did something I thought was funny and it wasn’t taken that way.” He also said, “The world is different than it was when I was a little kid,” referring to changing perceptions of what is acceptable. CBS News reported his response; his comments describe his view of the incident, not a resolution of the complaint.
In October 2022, the Los Angeles Times, citing Puck, reported that the woman alleged Murray kissed and straddled her, and that a witness also filed a complaint. The same report said a settlement had been reached. That is a reported settlement, not a court judgment or proof of liability. The report also connects Davis’s memoir to her recollections about Quick Change.

How did Murray describe the incident in 2025?
In a 2025 interview with the Guardian, Murray said he had kissed the woman through a mask, that she was not a stranger, and that they had known each other and lunched together. He said: “I gave her a kiss through a mask. And she wasn’t a stranger.” He also said: “To me it’s still funny, the idea that you could give someone a kiss with a mask on. It’s still stupid. It’s all it was.” Murray criticized the studio’s handling of the incident.
Those remarks are Murray’s later account and interpretation. They belong alongside—not in place of—the reported complaint, production suspension and reported settlement. The Guardian’s account does not settle the disputed question of intent. The Guardian’s 2025 interview provides his retrospective comments.

What can—and can’t—be concluded?
- What supports the reputation: named collaborators have publicly described difficult or upsetting encounters with Murray over a span of years, and a 2022 complaint led to the suspension of Being Mortal production.
- What remains attributed: many historical accounts are personal recollections, and the details reported about the Being Mortal complaint were relayed by news outlets citing other reporting.
- What the record does not establish: a representative measure of how often such conduct occurred, a universal judgment about Murray’s character, or a court finding on the 2022 complaint.
The most accurate explanation is therefore that “mean” is a public reputation shaped by multiple attributed accounts and renewed scrutiny of workplace conduct—not a precise, measured description that can be applied to every colleague or encounter.
