The scene most often meant by this title is the home invasion in A Clockwork Orange (1971): Alex and his gang attack writer Frank Alexander and sexually assault his wife while Alex sings “Singin’ in the Rain.” Malcolm McDowell introduced the song during rehearsal; it was not part of the scene’s original conception. “Most controversial” is a subjective description, not an established ranking, and the film’s wider controversy cannot be attributed to this sequence alone.
Which scene is usually meant?
It is the assault at the home of Frank Alexander, a writer played by Patrick Magee. Alex, played by Malcolm McDowell, and his gang break in and attack Alexander and his wife. During the assault, Alex sings and dances to “Singin’ in the Rain,” the 1929 song made especially familiar by the 1952 musical of the same name.
The sequence stands out not simply because it depicts violence, but because the jaunty song accompanies sexual violence. That contrast is plainly present in the scene; what it means is open to interpretation. It can make the action feel more unsettling by setting a familiar, buoyant performance against cruelty. The singing does not make the assault comic or harmless.
Was “Singin’ in the Rain” in the script?
No. Accounts of the production describe the song as a rehearsal discovery rather than a planned element of the scene. The American Society of Cinematographers’ 1999 retrospective says the first two shooting days yielded little usable action. On the third day, Stanley Kubrick blocked part of the sequence and asked McDowell whether he could sing. McDowell knew the song by heart, and the improvised performance became the scene’s defining musical detail. American Cinematographer’s account describes the rehearsal and Kubrick’s response.

In a later recollection reported by the Los Angeles Times, McDowell said that the ideas they had tried were not working. When Kubrick asked whether he could dance, McDowell began dancing, striking the stunt performer and singing. This is McDowell’s account as reported by the newspaper, not a transcript of the shoot. The 2001 profile recounts his version.
How did Kubrick secure the song?
After the rehearsal, Kubrick pursued permission to use the song. The ASC retrospective reports a fee of $10,000 for 30 seconds, a figure tied to the rights arrangement at the time—not a current rate. It also says Kubrick later asked Stanley Donen, director of the 1952 musical, personally for permission. Donen reportedly replied, “Why would I be? It didn’t affect the movie Singin’ in the Rain.” The account does not establish that the song’s original writers or performers had a role in developing the scene.

What did the scene inherit from Anthony Burgess’s novel?
A Clockwork Orange adapts Anthony Burgess’s 1962 book. Kubrick said his screenplay work was mainly a matter of selection and editing, alongside some reshaping and additions. The assault belongs to the adaptation’s broader story of Alex and violence; the choice to sing “Singin’ in the Rain,” however, came from McDowell’s performance in rehearsal, according to the production accounts. The distinction matters: the scene’s memorable musical juxtaposition was a film-making decision, not simply a detail carried over from the novel.
What did Kubrick say about rehearsal and meaning?
In a 1972 interview reproduced by ArchivioKubrick, Kubrick said the assault scene “was rehearsed longer than any other scene in the film and appeared to be going nowhere.” The interview supports the account of an extended rehearsal process, but not the idea that Kubrick described this as the film’s most important scene.

In another 1972 interview, Kubrick said the story worked on political, sociological, philosophical and psychological-symbolic levels. That offers context for reading the sequence as part of the film’s wider treatment of violence and behavior, but it does not settle on one definitive meaning for the song or the scene. The reproduced interview on rehearsal and the interview on the story’s different levels provide his comments.

The scene is a strong candidate for the film’s most controversial moment because of its depiction of sexual violence and its conspicuous use of a cheerful popular song. But “most controversial” remains a judgment, not a verifiable ranking: no audience poll or objective measure establishes it as Kubrick’s most controversial scene.

The film’s release history shows that controversy extended beyond one sequence. The ASC retrospective says the film initially received an X rating in the United States. In October 1972, Kubrick withdrew it from U.S. theaters for 60 days while 30 seconds of explicit sexual material from two scenes were replaced with alternate footage; the revised version received an R rating and returned at the end of that year. The retrospective also reports that Kubrick withdrew the film from distribution in England in 1974, after copycat crimes were attributed to it, and that it remained unavailable there until after his death in 1999. That history is about the film as a whole and does not prove that this assault sequence alone caused any rating, withdrawal or public response.
