David Chase wanted Steven Van Zandt in The Sopranos after noticing his presence and humor on television. Van Zandt later recalled that Chase first considered him for Tony Soprano, but his lack of acting experience made HBO wary of putting a novice in the lead. James Gandolfini played Tony; Van Zandt became Silvio Dante, a role developed from a character treatment Van Zandt had already written.
What made David Chase want Van Zandt in the show?
Chase was a longtime Bruce Springsteen and E Street Band fan, and Van Zandt’s face had caught his attention. The decisive moment came when Chase and his wife, Denise, watched Van Zandt introduce the Rascals at their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Chase recalled finding the speech funny and Van Zandt magnetic, and telling his wife, “That guy has got to be in the show!” Vanity Fair’s 2012 oral history includes Chase’s account.
Was Van Zandt originally considered for Tony Soprano?
According to Van Zandt, yes: he recalled that Chase initially wanted him to play Tony. Van Zandt had never acted, however, and he remembered HBO questioning whether the lead role should depend on a complete novice. In a CBS 60 Minutes transcript, he recalled the objection this way: “Are you outta your mind, you know? You gonna depend on a guy who never acted before?”
That is Van Zandt’s account of the idea and HBO’s concern, not a complete independent record of the network’s casting deliberations. The accounts establish that Chase wanted him in the series and that Van Zandt remembered a Tony possibility; they do not document every step or alternative considered. James Gandolfini ultimately played Tony.

How did Van Zandt’s Silvio Dante character become part of the series?
Silvio was not yet a character in the show when Van Zandt was being cast. Van Zandt had written an earlier treatment for Silvio Dante: an independent, retired hitman who owned a large, old-fashioned club and felt out of step with modern culture. In his 2002 Fresh Air interview, Van Zandt said the original venue was a costly, Copacabana-style club. The budget led to a strip-club setting, he explained, adding, “And Silvio Dante was born.”
Van Zandt later described Chase offering to create a new role so he would not feel he was taking work from an actor. Van Zandt proposed his Silvio treatment, and recalled Chase replying, “We’ll make it a strip club.” He recounted that exchange in a 2019 Boston Globe interview.

Why the casting story is more than an audition tale
The available accounts describe a sequence: Chase noticed Van Zandt, wanted him in the series, and—after the Tony idea ran into the concern about his inexperience—Van Zandt’s pre-existing character concept offered a way to create a part for him. Van Zandt’s main acting experience came from learning on the job with The Sopranos. The sources do not establish a conventional contest in which he won Silvio over a documented list of other actors.
