Colson Baker has given two different explanations for the name Machine Gun Kelly. In a 2013 interview, he said it came from his “rapid fire delivery” and denied a connection to the gangster. In a 2019 WIRED interview, he said he took it from “the actual Machine Gun Kelly”—in a humorous exchange that does not establish a real payment or licensing deal.
What did Colson Baker say about his name?
| Interview | What Baker said | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 2013, The Untitled Magazine | “It comes from the rapid fire delivery that I was well known for.” Asked if the gangster had anything to do with it, he answered, “Nah, not at all.” | He then attributed the name to his delivery and denied a gangster connection. Read the interview. |
| 2019, WIRED Autocomplete Interview | “I took it from the actual Machine Gun Kelly and paid a lot of money for it.” | He later invoked the historical namesake in a humorous answer. The exchange does not document a payment or rights arrangement. Watch the interview. |
The accounts conflict, and the available interviews do not explain why. It is most accurate to report both, rather than present either as a definitive origin story. Baker identified himself as Colson Baker when asked his real name in the 2019 interview.
Who was the original Machine Gun Kelly?
The historical gangster was George Kelly Barnes. The FBI’s account connects him to the nickname and describes his notoriety after the 1933 kidnapping of oil magnate Charles Urschel. That history identifies the figure Baker referred to in 2019; it does not settle which explanation Baker intended when he adopted his stage name. The FBI’s historical account also notes that Barnes probably never uttered the famous surrender words “Don’t Shoot, G-Men, Don’t Shoot.”
Why is his name sometimes written as “mgk”?
The artist has also used the lowercase styling “mgk.” Billboard Canada described this as an official change in 2025, though artist branding and platform styling can change over time. This styling does not resolve the conflicting accounts of the name’s origin. Read Billboard Canada’s report.
