Stephen Colbert’s awkward-looking interview with Eminem was a comedy bit, not a documented confrontation. In a 2015 episode of the Michigan public-access show Only in Monroe, Colbert treated the famous rapper—introduced as Marshall Mathers—as though he were an obscure local musician, then tested his Michigan credentials with a Bob Seger quiz. The straight-faced setup left Eminem appearing unsure whether Colbert was serious.
What was the Colbert and Eminem interview?
It was part of an episode of Only in Monroe, a Michigan public-access program that Stephen Colbert hosted as a guest in early July 2015. The appearance came while he was preparing to take over The Late Show later that year. CBS News reported that Colbert filled in for the show’s usual hosts, Michelle Bowman and Kaye Lani Rae Rafko Wilson, and interviewed Michigan native Eminem. CBS News’ report and ABC News’ account describe the appearance as part of that local-TV visit.
Eminem appeared under his real name, Marshall Mathers, and was promoting Southpaw, the boxing film that featured one of his songs. The interview is one part of a much longer episode, rather than a standalone late-night segment.
Why does the interview feel so awkward?
Colbert’s character behaves as if he has never heard of Eminem. He introduces Mathers as a local musician and asks whether music is a career or a hobby. He also asks, “Are you one of the slow talking rappers, or one of the fast talking rappers?”—a line reported by Jeremy Gordon in Pitchfork’s July 1, 2015 coverage.

The joke depends on the gap between the host’s studied cluelessness and Eminem’s restrained, sometimes puzzled responses. CBS News described Eminem as seeming confused about whether Colbert was serious; ABC News characterized Colbert as acting as though he did not know who Mathers was. Those descriptions help explain the on-screen tension, but they do not establish what Eminem privately thought or felt.
What is the Bob Seger quiz about?
Colbert uses Bob Seger songs to tease Eminem about being from Michigan. The quiz turns the interview’s pretend-naïve premise into a local-identity joke: if Mathers claims Michigan, Colbert suggests, he ought to know the state’s famous rock musician. Reports say Eminem knew few of the songs, and ABC News quoted Colbert saying, “You claim to be from Michigan, but you don’t know these songs.” ABC News and Pitchfork both describe the quiz as part of the bit.

The contemporaneous reports support reading the discomfort as the effect of Colbert’s comic premise. They describe a deliberately awkward exchange in which the host pretends not to recognize a globally famous rapper; they do not report a feud or a genuine argument. The distinction matters: the visible uncertainty is part of why the bit lands, but it is not proof that Eminem was angry or that the exchange turned hostile.
