Bill Hudson is her biological father. Her mother, Goldie Hawn, later had a long-term relationship with Kurt Russell, whom Kate has described as a father figure in her upbringing. Why she described the relationship as “warming up” in 2024
In an interview with Tracy Smith for CBS Sunday Morning, reported on April 26, 2024, Hudson was asked about her relationship with Bill. She said, “I don’t really have one. But it’s like, I, you know, it’s warming up. There’s warming up with this all happening … but it’ll be whatever it will be, you know. I have no expectation of that with my father, you know. It’s like, I just want him to be happy.”

Her wording holds two points together: she said they did not really have a relationship, but she sensed some warmth developing. She did not describe a reunion, regular contact, or a repaired father-daughter bond. CBS’s page presented the remarks as a preview of an interview whose full segment was scheduled to air April 28, 2024; it is not a complete transcript of the segment.
How Hudson described the estrangement
Hudson has not said that Bill was absent throughout her life. Speaking to Howard Stern in 2016, as reported by British Vogue on September 29, she recalled: “Not my whole life. He was around when we were young, it sort of teetered out.”

Vogue also reported that Hudson said her parents married in 1976 and separated in 1980, when Kate was a baby and her brother Oliver was four. She said Hawn never spoke poorly of Bill and that she understood the estrangement did not have to do with her or Oliver. Those are Hudson’s recollections and understanding, not an independently established account of Bill’s reasons or of every private event.
What forgiveness means—and what it does not mean
In the same 2016 interview, Hudson described forgiveness as part of how she had come to terms with the situation: “I really do recognise whatever those issues are, it’s just something that he has to live with, and that must be painful for him. So I forgive him.” She was expressing her own perspective; forgiveness is not evidence that contact resumed or that the relationship was repaired.

In a 2020 interview with Oprah Winfrey for WW, Hudson said Bill was a wonderful musician and that music was a point of connection, “even though I don’t connect with him through any kind of real paternal relationship.” She also said she was proud of the Hudson name and described forgiveness as liberating. Her comments make the story more complicated than simple rejection: she can value her name and musical inheritance while being clear about the absence of a close father-daughter bond.

The latest update in the sources cited here is Hudson’s April 2024 description of things “warming up,” paired with her statement that she had no expectations. That supports cautious possibility, not a claim that the two reconciled. The public interviews and reports establish Hudson’s account at particular moments; they do not provide a full account from both sides or confirm what contact, if any, followed the 2024 interview.
