The initiative brings together housing and urban improvements with employment, training and social support, with planning shaped by residents.
What Favela 3D is—and where it operates
The name Favela 3D stands for Digna, Digital e Desenvolvida—Dignified, Digital and Developed. The Town says the project began in 2023 in Favela do Haiti, in São Paulo’s southeast. The city government describes the community as being in the east of the city. The sources do not establish a more precise address.
Preparatory study work began in 2022; the public launch followed in 2023. The Town’s stated ambition is to interrupt poverty through urban intervention and social and economic development. That is the project’s goal, not evidence that poverty has been eliminated. The Town’s project page describes its purpose and reports progress through the end of 2024.
How the project is designed
The city government says the work began with a study of local conditions, followed by planning with residents to identify priorities. Its three connected areas of focus are:

The model combines physical improvements with economic and social support rather than treating construction as a standalone solution. In its May 2023 launch announcement, the city reported that 17% of people in the relevant local diagnostic were unemployed. That is a launch-period figure, not a current unemployment rate. The announcement described plans for a worker-support center, vocational courses and workshops; it should not be read as proof that every planned service was delivered. The Prefeitura de São Paulo announcement outlines the diagnostic and the planned activities.
Who partnered with whom
The Town, Gerando Falcões, Gerdau and Fundação Grupo Volkswagen were named among the initiative’s partners. The city government also identified the Prefeitura de São Paulo, the state government and local organization Vozes da Periferia. The municipal account says the diagnosis and planning involved community participation, so the project should not be understood as a corporate effort designed or delivered by sponsors alone.

- Authentic, Real-World Construction Experience: The Pitsco True Scale House Framing Kit delivers a realistic construction model rather than simple assembly play. Students build a true 1:16 scale house model using 485 precision-cut balsa wood pieces, following professional-style house plans and construction methods aligned to real building practices. This architectural framing kit helps learners understand stud framing, scale lumber, and structural design in a way traditional model kits cannot.
- Blueprint Reading & Skill-Building: Designed as a hands-on architecture lesson for ages 14+, this model house framing kit guides students through a structured learning progression. Learners begin by interpreting blueprints, measuring to scale, and understanding architectural drawings before cutting, framing, and assembling the structure. The challenge builds accuracy, focus, and confidence, making it ideal for homeschooling, high school engineering projects, and blueprint reading practice tools.
- Choice-Based Design & Structural Comparison: Unlike most balsa wood house kits, this architectural model making supply allows students to choose between two realistic roof systems: truss or hip. Comparing a truss building kit to a hip roof framing model gives learners firsthand experience with real-world structural approaches used in residential construction, reinforcing problem-solving, interpretation, and decision-making while maintaining authentic construction standards.
- Classroom-Ready & Collaborative by Design: This classroom building kit is designed for individual or paired work, supporting collaboration and communication as students divide tasks, measure materials, and assemble the wooden house frame model together. Instructions are student-facing, with minimal teacher prep required beyond gathering shared tools. Projects can be stored safely during multi-week builds, making it well suited for extended classroom use.
- Career Pathways in Construction & Design: The True Scale House Framing Kit connects hands-on building to real careers in construction, architecture, engineering, drafting, and skilled trades. By applying construction terminology, reading plans, and working with a realistic construction model, students gain exposure to Career and Technical Education (CTE) construction concepts and civil engineering foundations, positioning this as a powerful architecture study kit and vocational training resource.
In the city’s May 2, 2023 announcement, then-mayor Ricardo Nunes said, “Se todos que empreendessem em São Paulo tivessem um olhar social, a gente teria um país melhor.”

| Reporting period | Reported result | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Launch period, 2023 | 17% of people were reported unemployed in the local diagnostic. | Prefeitura de São Paulo, May 2, 2023. Historical diagnostic figure, not a current rate. |
| By the end of 2024 | 290 families had been impacted through community-strengthening, employment, entrepreneurship, training and individualized-support actions. | The Town’s official project page; partner-reported progress. |
| May 2025 | Gerdau reported full employment, 100% water supply and sewage collection, all children in school, and solar panels installed for street lighting. | Gerdau’s May 5, 2025 two-year announcement; partner-reported milestones, not independently verified causal effects. |
Gerdau also published launch-period baseline and target percentages for housing, education, internet access, literacy and employment. Those figures describe the original announcement’s baselines or goals, not later measured outcomes, and should not be blended with the 2025 milestones. Gerdau’s launch-period announcement contains those measures and targets.

The reported figures suggest the initiative spans multiple dimensions of community life, from family support and work to basic services and lighting. But partner reports alone cannot establish how much of a change was caused by Favela 3D, how outcomes were measured, or whether they continued after the reporting dates. The sources reviewed do not provide a clearly identified independent study quantifying causal effects. For the latest dated milestones cited here, Gerdau reported results in its May 5, 2025 project update; current operating status after that date is not established by these sources.
