Breaking Bad takes its title from an old Southern expression that Vince Gilligan borrowed to mean “to raise hell.” The phrase’s reported slang meaning is one layer; in the series, the title also evokes Walter White’s gradual movement from mild-mannered teacher toward criminal kingpin—and the tension between the man he thinks he is and the man his actions reveal.

What does “breaking bad” mean?

The Television Academy’s interview archive says series creator Vince Gilligan borrowed Breaking Bad from an old Southern expression meaning “to raise hell.” That is the phrase’s creator-linked slang gloss, not a claim that the words are a universal dictionary definition or that every viewer will know the expression.

TIME’s 2013 essay notes the expression’s regional association with Virginia and interprets “breaking” as a change of course made through many small shifts. That is a critic’s reading of the title’s fit, rather than a separate definition of the idiom.

How the title fits Walter White

AMC’s 2007 series announcement introduces Walter as a mild-mannered chemistry teacher in New Mexico who receives a Stage III cancer diagnosis and becomes determined to provide for his family financially. The announcement describes the drama as tracing his transformation into a kingpin in the drug trade. In that context, the title points toward a turn from ordinary life into criminal conduct; it is not simply another way to say “becoming a drug dealer.” AMC’s original series announcement

Gilligan’s account adds a moral contradiction to that arc. The Television Academy quotes him describing Walter as someone who continues to regard himself as a good provider and a good man even as his behavior conflicts with that self-image. Gilligan calls that gap part of the show’s experiment: “That was the point. That’s the experiment of Breaking Bad.” Television Academy interview with Vince Gilligan

Does Walter become bad, or reveal what was already there?

The title invites both readings. On the surface, Walter’s choices take him from family provider toward criminal power. But the series’ dramatic question is not only how far he changes; it is also whether pride, arrogance, and bitterness that were already present become more visible as he acts on them. TIME develops that interpretation through the idea of many small changes in direction. It is a critical reading of Walter’s arc, not a definitive answer attributed to Gilligan.

That gradual drift is why the title does more than announce a crime story. “To raise hell” supplies the reported expression behind the name; Walter’s incremental moral transformation gives the phrase its particular force in the series.

Series context

The Television Academy records Breaking Bad as a five-season series with 62 episodes, broadcast from January 20, 2008, to September 29, 2013. Those dates place Walter’s arc across the show’s full run; they do not establish where the series is currently available to stream. Television Academy series record
