In a Disney cast interview published July 31, 2021, Blunt said their rapport was immediate: “It was instant,” she recalled, adding, “We were pals for life immediately.” She also described their quick back-and-forth as a rapport that could “ping-pong” between them.
Blunt had used another affectionate description in an Entertainment Tonight interview published July 6, 2021, calling Johnson her “most enormous buddy.” The wording is hers, and it frames the bond as friendship.

Why people may mistake the film’s romance for real life
Jungle Cruise gives Lily Houghton and Frank Wolff an on-screen romantic arc. That fictional relationship is separate from the actors’ off-screen friendship. Their characters’ chemistry is not evidence that Blunt and Johnson are a couple.
The film’s production press kit offers a corroborating but interested perspective: producer Beau Flynn said the actors had become “hard, fast friends in real life.” Because Flynn was discussing the film he produced, that comment is best understood as a production-side description, alongside Blunt’s own remarks.

A 2025 Associated Press report about Johnson’s film The Smashing Machine described Blunt as eager to see him challenge himself in more dramatic work and noted that they had become close on Jungle Cruise. It indicates public professional support; it does not establish every detail of their private lives.
The most grounded account, then, is a friendship formed while working together and continued in a visible professional context. Neither the film’s plot nor the affectionate language in interviews supports a claim that they are romantically involved.
