Footage associated with The CW’s cancelled live-action Powerpuff pilot surfaced online in March 2025. It was reported as a possible rejected trailer, but the available coverage does not confirm that it was an official network trailer. The pilot was filmed in 2021, sent back for reworking, and ultimately abandoned without a series order.
What leaked, and was it an official trailer?
In March 2025, entertainment outlets reported that video connected to The CW’s planned live-action Powerpuff project had appeared online. The Independent described it as footage that may have been a rejected trailer; that wording is important because the reviewed reporting does not establish that The CW officially released or approved it as a trailer. The Independent also reported that the footage had been removed from YouTube. The Independent’s report and TheWrap’s coverage discuss the leak.
“Bonkers” is a reaction, not a verified description of the video’s provenance or production purpose. The confirmed distinction is that the 2025 clip was reported as possible promotional footage, while the separately documented project history concerns a pilot filmed in 2021.
What was The CW’s live-action Powerpuff project?
The CW developed a live-action pilot based on the Powerpuff Girls franchise. Unlike the animated series’ child protagonists, the planned version reimagined Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup as disillusioned young adults. TheWrap’s 2021 account described the adult-oriented premise.

Reported cast
- Chloe Bennet as Blossom
- Dove Cameron as Bubbles
- Yana Perrault as Buttercup
- Donald Faison as Professor Drake Utonium
These were the reported principal roles for the pilot, not a cast for a completed series. The project never received a series order.
What happened to the pilot?
- 2021: The pilot was filmed, but The CW did not select it for the network’s 2021–22 schedule.
- May 2021: The network said it would rework the pilot for possible later consideration. On May 25, then-CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz said the version he had seen might have been “a little too campy” and “not as rooted in reality as it might have.” TVLine reported his comments and the rework decision.
- 2023: The CW stopped redeveloping the project, according to TVLine’s report. The pilot did not become a series.
- March 2025: Reports described footage associated with the cancelled project as a possible rejected trailer.
Did the leaked footage cause the cancellation?
The available reporting does not connect the 2025 leak to the project’s end. The pilot had already been reworked after missing The CW’s 2021–22 slate, and the network later stopped developing the project. Pedowitz’s remarks explain why the first pilot was sent back for changes; they should not be treated as a definitive explanation for the later decision to abandon development. He separately summarized the first version as “just a miss,” as TVLine reported.
