Sydney Sweeney’s Christy is a 2025 biographical drama about real boxer Christy Martin, born Christy Salters. It follows her rise in women’s boxing and the abusive relationship with her husband and coach, Jim Martin, that culminated in his 2010 attempt to kill her. The film tells a story of athletic achievement, abuse and survival—not a complete documentary record.
Who was Christy Martin?
Christy Martin, born Christy Salters, became one of the most prominent faces of women’s boxing in the mid-1990s. TIME describes her as helping bring attention and legitimacy to a sport that had received little recognition.
Her story also includes years of abuse by her husband and coach, Jim Martin. TIME reports that he attempted to murder her in 2010. That violence is central to the biopic’s account of Martin’s life, alongside her boxing career.
What is the film about, and who made it?
The film stars Sydney Sweeney as Martin. David Michôd directed Christy and co-wrote its screenplay with Mirrah Foulkes. The film’s official synopsis frames the story around Martin’s rise in boxing and a relationship that becomes life-or-death; TIME supplies the reported real-life context of the abuse and attempted murder.

Martin was involved in the production: TIME reports that the filmmakers consulted her and that she attended part of the shoot.
How accurate is Christy?
Foulkes told TIME, “It was important to us to try and stick as close to historical accuracy as we could.” That describes the screenwriter’s stated aim, not independent verification of every scene. TIME also reports a specific adaptation choice: two of Martin’s former girlfriends are represented through one composite character.
