Yes. Patty Jenkins’s 2003 film Monster, starring Charlize Theron, is inspired by the life and crimes of Aileen Wuornos, a Florida sex worker who killed men in 1989–1990 and was executed in 2002. But it is a dramatic feature, not a documentary: its end-credit disclaimer says that some characters are composites or inventions and that some events are fictional.
Who was Aileen Wuornos?
Wuornos was a Florida sex worker whose case became the basis for Monster. A 2025 Netflix Tudum retrospective summarizes the case as seven killings in Florida between 1989 and 1990. A 2004 CBS report, by contrast, says Wuornos confessed to six murders and claimed she had killed in self-defense against violent assaults while working as a prostitute. Those are different source-specific descriptions—one summarizing victims, the other her confession—not a settled count-by-count legal timeline.

The American Film Institute (AFI) says Wuornos spent twelve years on death row before her execution by lethal injection on 9 October 2002. The film’s dramatic arc compresses or omits much of the wider history of her life and case.
How accurate is Monster?
The film draws on real people and events, but its own end-credit disclaimer is explicit: “While this film is inspired by real events in the life of Aileen Wuornos, many characters are composites or inventions, and a number of incidents depicted in this film are fictional.” AFI’s catalog entry also notes that Jenkins shaped the murders into a narrative arc, structuring the first and last as “bookends.” The film should not be treated as evidence of exactly what happened in each killing.

Selby is based on Tyria Moore
Selby Wall, played by Christina Ricci, is based on Wuornos’s real girlfriend, Tyria Moore. Selby is a fictionalized portrayal, not a documentary record of Moore’s words or actions.
Other characters and incidents were changed
AFI identifies Thomas, played by Bruce Dern, as fictionalized. Jenkins created him to express her view of Wuornos as a misanthrope rather than simply a man-hater. AFI also notes that the movie leaves out much of Wuornos’s early life. Together with the end-credit disclaimer, these choices make clear that the film is an interpretation, not a literal reconstruction.

Why did Jenkins structure the story this way?
Jenkins said she wanted to focus on the circumstances surrounding the crimes rather than make a slasher film. AFI’s account of her interview with LA Weekly quotes her explanation of the bookend structure: “I wanted the first and last murder to be like bookends. In the first murder, he’s a murderer and she’s the victim. By the last murder, she’s a murderer and he’s the victim.” That is the filmmaker’s account of the story’s design, not a legal finding about motive or the details of a particular crime.
Theron said she and Jenkins wanted to show the circumstances around Wuornos without excusing her crimes. In an interview reported by AboutFilm, Theron put it plainly: “We stayed very true to the fact that she killed innocent people.” The performance asks viewers to consider Wuornos’s circumstances while keeping the harm she caused in view.

Theron changed her appearance substantially for the part. AFI reports that she cut her hair, gained 30 pounds, wore a prosthetic overbite, and put her salary toward the film’s finishing costs. CBS describes the weight gain as 25–30 pounds and also mentions shaved eyebrows and prosthetic teeth. The sources differ slightly on the weight figure; the consistent point is that Theron gained roughly 25–30 pounds and used prosthetic teeth for the role.
When was the film released?
AFI’s catalog records that Monster opened in New York on 24 December 2003 and went into general release on 9 January 2004. Its 2003 title year reflects the New York opening; the broader release followed in January 2004.

- Separate the case from the drama. The film is inspired by Wuornos’s life, but its disclaimer acknowledges invented characters and incidents.
- Attribute claims about the number of killings. Netflix Tudum’s 2025 retrospective summarizes seven victims; CBS’s 2004 report describes a confession to six murders. Do not treat those formulations as interchangeable.
- Distinguish context from justification. The filmmakers sought to portray circumstances around the crimes, while Theron said the film remained true to the fact that Wuornos killed innocent people.
- Do not infer exact events from the film. Jenkins deliberately shaped incidents for narrative effect, and AFI says the first and last murders were structured as bookends.
For a comparison with another retelling, useful questions include what records or interviews it draws on, how it presents Wuornos’s self-defense claim, whether it separates convictions from confessions or allegations, and which people or events it fictionalizes. AFI says Jenkins obtained rights to Wuornos’s letters to her friend Dawn Botkins; Netflix’s 2025 retrospective describes a later documentary that uses archival footage and conversations. Those approaches provide different kinds of material, but neither removes the need to distinguish documented claims from dramatization.
