In her account, these were two different sparks—not one real woman who inspired every detail.
Where did the name “Jolene” come from?
In an interview on WNYC Studios’ Dolly Parton’s America, Parton recalled staying after a Porter Wagoner Show performance with the cast to sign autographs. A girl introduced herself as Jolene. Parton liked the name and told the girl that if she ever used it in a song, the girl would know it was for her.
As Parton walked back to the bus, she repeated the name to herself so she would remember it. She connected that repetition to the song’s recurring call of “Jolene.” Parton summed up the account: “That’s the true story of how Jolene came to be.” Listen to the WNYC Studios interview.
Was “Jolene” about a real person and Parton’s husband?
Parton said the song’s narrative drew on a different incident: a “little fun thing, that little jealous thing” involving her husband and a bank employee. She teased him about going to the bank because he seemed to enjoy the employee’s attention. Parton said it was not a major problem, describing it as “not that big of a deal.”

So the real-life ingredients in Parton’s account are distinct: the young fan supplied the name, and the bank anecdote helped supply the jealous-love-triangle story. The account does not identify the fan as the bank employee or suggest there was one real “Jolene” behind the entire song.
When was “Jolene” released?
HISTORY dates the single’s release to October 15, 1973. Parton’s official album page dates the Jolene album to February 4, 1974. The song appeared on that album. HISTORY’s release account and Parton’s official album page provide those dates.

Parton’s official page reports that the album reached No. 6 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart and calls the title track her second No. 1 country single. HISTORY also reports that the song reached No. 1 on country charts in the United States and Canada. These are the sources’ chart descriptions, rather than a new audit of chart records. The official album page also says the title track received a Grammy nomination for Best Female Country Vocal Performance; it does not specify the ceremony year in the text cited here.
Did Parton intend a queer reading of the song?
The WNYC episode includes musicologist Nadine Hubbs’s interpretation that the narrator’s intense praise of Jolene can support a queer or homoerotic reading. That is an interpretation of the song, not evidence of Parton’s original intent. Asked about the reading, Parton said she was not thinking that way when she wrote it; she described writing from a natural emotion and liking the musical idea.

What the origin story tells us
Parton’s account separates a memorable name from a story sparked by everyday jealousy. The song turns those separate inputs into a vivid plea, but its narrator and dramatic situation should not be treated as a literal record of a serious marital crisis.
