Jonathan Brandis began acting as a child, became a teen star as Lucas Wolenczak on SeaQuest DSV, and died at 27 on November 12, 2003. Early news reports said the investigation was open; a later report said the coroner ruled his death a suicide. The available accounts do not establish why he died.
How Jonathan Brandis began acting
Brandis started as a child model and appeared in commercials by age five. By six, he had a recurring role on the daytime drama One Life to Live. When he was nine, his family moved from Danbury, Connecticut, to Los Angeles to support his acting career. His early work led to television guest appearances and film roles, including Sidekicks and Ladybugs. The Los Angeles Times’ 2003 obituary recounts this progression.

Why SeaQuest DSV made him famous
Brandis’s best-known role was Lucas Wolenczak, a young computer prodigy on the science-fiction series SeaQuest DSV. He appeared on the show from 1993 to 1995, and the role helped make him a teen idol. CBS News’ Associated Press report and the Los Angeles Times obituary identify the series as central to his public recognition.
The scale of that attention was striking: the Los Angeles Times reported that, at its peak, Brandis received as many as 4,000 fan letters a week. In a 1994 interview quoted in the obituary, he said, “I never perceived myself like this — a teen magazine kid. As an actor, you just hope to continue working. Then when you start getting mail! I sure never knew it was coming. It’s not something you prepare for.”

His work beyond the teen-idol years
Brandis continued acting after SeaQuest DSV. Among his later credits was the 2002 film The Year That Trembled. The Los Angeles Times quoted Akron Beacon Journal critic George M. Thomas praising his performance in the film. TV Guide also reported that Brandis had a starring role in the ABC drama pilot 111 Gramercy Park. These credits show that his work continued beyond his best-known television role; they do not explain his death.
What was reported about Brandis’s death
Brandis died on November 12, 2003, at age 27. He was found unconscious in Los Angeles and taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Reports published while the investigation was still open described the cause as undetermined or not yet announced. The Associated Press report carried by CBS News on November 25 reflects that early status.

The cited accounts establish the coroner’s ruling, but they do not provide a definitive personal explanation for why Brandis died. They do not establish that career setbacks, fame, a relationship, depression, or any other particular factor caused his death. It would be speculation to present any of those explanations as fact.
