That is a specific, story-era comparison—not a definitive ranking across every Dragon Ball anime, film, game, and continuity.
Who is the strongest Dragon Ball character?
For the ending of the Granolah the Survivor arc in the Dragon Ball Super manga, the strongest clearly evidenced character among the fighters discussed here is Black Frieza. An official Dragon Ball account says Frieza trained for ten years in another dimension, then emerged in his Black form and left both Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta helpless. It describes Frieza as the true strongest warrior in the universe at that point in the story. Dragon Ball Official Site, 2022.
This does not establish Black Frieza as the strongest being in every Dragon Ball continuity or at every point in the story. The official sources cited here do not give an exhaustive ranking that includes every divine, angelic, fused, anime, film, or alternate-continuity character. A useful answer therefore needs a defined scope and direct comparisons rather than one all-time ladder.
What the strongest-character comparisons establish
| Character or comparison | What the story evidence says | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Black Frieza | At the Granolah arc’s endpoint, Frieza’s Black form overwhelms Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta after Frieza trained for ten years in another dimension. Dragon Ball Official Site, 2022. | A permanent ranking over every character, continuity, or later story development. |
| Granolah | A wish makes Granolah the strongest warrior in the universe, but the cost is a dramatically shortened lifespan. Dragon Ball Official Site, 2022. | A lasting, all-time position independent of the wish or the arc’s events. |
| Gas | Later in the arc, a wish puts Gas in the position of strongest warrior. Dragon Ball Official Site, 2021. | A permanent ranking or a complete order among all Dragon Ball characters. |
| Whis and Beerus | In the Battle of Gods story account, Whis is Beerus’s martial arts master and is presented as his toughest opponent. Beerus is Universe 7’s God of Destruction. Whis feature, 2023; Beerus feature, 2021. | A ranking of Whis and Beerus against Black Frieza or every other character across continuities. |
Why “strongest” changes during the Granolah arc
Granolah’s wish creates a conditional title
Granolah becomes the universe’s strongest warrior through a wish, with a severe reduction to his lifespan as its price. This is a wish-created status within the story, not evidence of a stable power ranking that holds regardless of circumstances. Dragon Ball Official Site, 2022.

Gas takes the title later
The Heeters subsequently use a wish to make Gas the strongest warrior. Because the title changes hands through arc events, “strongest” needs a story point attached to it. The official chapter synopsis describes Gas’s wish-granted position. Dragon Ball Official Site, 2021.
Black Frieza changes the endpoint comparison
After ten years of training in another dimension, Frieza reveals Black Frieza and defeats the Goku and Vegeta forms that had been central to the conflict. That direct result makes him the strongest clearly evidenced fighter at the arc’s endpoint among those comparisons. It should not be turned into a universal claim about every being or continuity. Dragon Ball Official Site, 2022.

Where Beerus and Whis fit
Beerus is a God of Destruction, not an ordinary mortal benchmark
Beerus holds the role of Universe 7’s God of Destruction. The official Battle of Gods feature recounts that he defeats Goku in two hits during their first meeting. That scene shows the gap between Beerus and Goku in that encounter; it is not a head-to-head comparison with Black Frieza. Dragon Ball Official Site, 2021.
Whis is shown above Beerus in their Battle of Gods relationship
Whis is Beerus’s attendant and martial arts master. The official feature says he subdued Beerus with one karate chop and identifies him as Beerus’s toughest opponent. This supports placing Whis above Beerus in the context of that account, but it does not supply a complete ranking that connects either character to the manga’s Black Frieza comparison. Dragon Ball Official Site, 2023.

How to read Dragon Ball power rankings
- Fix the continuity: say whether a comparison is about the manga, anime, a film, or a game. Do not combine them into one list without labeling the scope.
- Fix the story point: a character’s position can change after training, a transformation, or a wish.
- Name the form and conditions: Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta are specific forms, not interchangeable labels for every version of Goku and Vegeta.
- Separate results from titles: a demonstrated victory is different evidence from a wish granting someone a temporary “strongest warrior” status.
- Keep the claim within its evidence: “strongest in the universe” during an arc does not by itself mean strongest across all Dragon Ball media.
For the manga’s Granolah arc endpoint, the supported comparison is straightforward: Black Frieza defeats Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta. Whis is presented above Beerus in the separate Battle of Gods account. The available official material does not establish a single order joining those comparisons into a complete franchise-wide ranking.
Popularity is not a measure of strength
Dragon Ball’s official DRAGON BALL THE ONE event is described as a worldwide character popularity poll. Poll placement reflects popularity, not combat ability, and should not be used to rank the strongest characters. Dragon Ball Official Site, November 20, 2025.
