Writer-director Macon Blair said the theatrical version of The Toxic Avenger added one visual-effects shot after the film premiered at Fantastic Fest in 2023. He described it only as a depiction of a body part, declining to elaborate at a family-friendly San Diego Comic-Con panel in 2025. His separate comments about making Winston older and centering his family belong to the remake’s adaptation choices, not to changes between the festival and theatrical versions.
What changed between the 2023 premiere and theatrical release?
At a 2025 San Diego Comic-Con panel, Blair said: “We added really just one VFX shot. I believe this is an all-ages crowd. It involves a depiction of a body part and that’s going to be added for theatrical release. I think you’ll notice it.” Moviefone reported his remarks. Blair did not identify the body part or describe the shot further, so its content should not be inferred.
This is Blair’s account of the post-premiere change; it is not an independently published comparison or count of the two cuts. His other remarks about the film’s story and effects explain how he approached the remake, rather than documenting additional edits after its festival screening.
How does Blair’s adaptation differ from the 1984 original?
Blair said he made Winston older and built the emotional story around his attempt to hold his family together. Georgia Public Broadcasting quoted him: “And so one of the things that we sort of changed was to make the guy a little bit older and have this whole story be more about trying to hold his family unit together. So that’s sort of the emotional thing we hang all the jokes and foolishness on.” Georgia Public Broadcasting published the interview in 2025.

That family emphasis also informs the tutu: in this version, Winston puts on a family Halloween costume while trying to cheer up his stepson. Blair said he wanted to preserve a sweetness he felt was present in the original even alongside its outrageous gore. In an August 2025 interview, he described the aim as retaining the original’s “vibe” while giving the character a new path, so the story could feel fresh rather than simply repeat what came before. ComingSoon published that interview.
What effects approach did the remake use?
Blair estimated that roughly 75% of the effects were practical, according to Georgia Public Broadcasting’s 2025 report. That figure is his estimate, not an independent production measurement. He also said the film used digital effects and digital “sweetening,” and that he wanted a real performer in the Toxie suit rather than a digitally rendered monster.

Why did the theatrical release take until 2025?
The Toxic Avenger premiered at Fantastic Fest in 2023 and screened at Beyond Fest about two weeks later. Blair told ComingSoon that the screenings went well, but mainstream distributors did not pick the film up at the time. He described a difficult market for films outside the mainstream, with buyers favoring mainstream hits, and said the wait was nerve-racking. That is Blair’s explanation and reported industry context, not proof of a single cause.
