Alvin Straight learns that his brother Lyle is ill and sets out to see him, despite their estrangement and Alvin’s limited mobility. Unable to drive a car, he makes the trip from Iowa to Wisconsin on a 1966 John Deere lawn mower. Disney’s synopsis describes the route as 260 miles. The slow pace turns the journey into a road drama about pride, memory and the chance to repair a relationship before time runs out.
The film gives that emotional urgency a plainspoken expression. In production press material, a passage presented as Alvin’s dialogue explains why he wants to reach his brother: “There’s no one knows your life better than a brother that’s near your age. He knows who you are and what you are better than anyone on Earth. My brother and I said some unforgivable things the last time we met, but I’m trying to put that behind me. And this trip is a hard swallow of my pride. I just hope I’m not too late.” This is film dialogue attributed to the character in the press kit, not a separately verified quotation from the real Alvin Straight.
Is The Straight Story based on a true story?
Yes. The film is based on Alvin Straight’s 1994 journey from Laurens, Iowa, to Mount Zion, Wisconsin. D23 describes the real trip as 260 miles and notes that the film was shot in the area where the event happened. The movie is a dramatization, so its scenes and dialogue should be understood as parts of a film rather than a documentary record of everything that occurred on the trip.

Who made the film?
David Lynch directed The Straight Story, with a screenplay by John Roach and Mary Sweeney. Angelo Badalamenti composed the score, and Freddie Francis was the director of photography, according to the production press kit. Lynch’s restrained, linear treatment suits this particular story; it should not be taken as a stand-in for the range of his filmmaking.
Release date, rating and runtime
Disney lists the U.S. release date as November 3, 1999. D23 records an October 15, 1999, release in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago; these dates refer to different release contexts. Disney+ classifies the film as a 1999 drama/biography, rates it G and lists a runtime of 1 hour 51 minutes. D23 gives the running time as 112 minutes and says the film was shot in CinemaScope. The two runtime listings differ slightly, so the source-specific figures are more useful than treating them as identical.
