The series is not a retelling of the real undercover assignment or the life of its subject, Sergio Chamy; it moves the idea to a fictional San Francisco retirement community and gives its retired investigator a different case.
The real story behind the series
The Mole Agent, directed by Chilean filmmaker Maite Alberdi, follows Sergio Chamy, an 83-year-old widower recruited by private investigator Rómulo Aitken. A family was concerned about a resident’s wellbeing in a care home, so Aitken trained Chamy to live there undercover and report what he found. The San Sebastián International Film Festival’s catalogue describes the assignment; CNN Chile identifies the home as being in El Monte and characterizes the concern as alleged mistreatment. Chamy was not a detective before the assignment, and he was not Ted Danson’s character under another name. The documentary follows a real person in a real care home; Netflix’s series adapts the broad undercover-in-a-residence idea into scripted comedy.
What the series changes
Netflix describes A Man on the Inside as the story of Charles, a retired professor recruited by a private detective to investigate a theft at Pacific View, a fictional retirement residence in San Francisco. The missing object is a resident’s family heirloom. Charles, Pacific View and the heirloom mystery are inventions of the series, not elements of Chamy’s documented assignment. Netflix Tudum.

Netflix’s account of the adaptation makes clear that the documentary was a creative and thematic starting point, not a script for the series. Schur told Netflix he was drawn to the film’s range of older people and called it “a beautiful meditation on aging, a subject we are uniquely terrible in this country at confronting, dealing with, or discussing.” In an interview with CNN Chile, he called the documentary “a North Star for the show.” Netflix Tudum; CNN Chile.

The documentary premiered at Sundance in 2020. In a March 15, 2021 press release, PBS’s POV said it was the first Chilean film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature; the nomination was for the 93rd Academy Awards. That context helps explain the adaptation’s connection to its source: the real assignment supplies an unusual setup, while the documentary’s deeper interest is in the people living in the care home and the connections they form. Schur’s comments describe that human perspective as central to why he wanted to fictionalize the premise.
