Yes. Mamie Fossett was a real U.S. deputy marshal, but the historical record described in available reporting places her documented work mainly in the late 1890s—not in the year 1923. Jennifer Carpenter plays her in season two of 1923, so the character is best understood as a dramatized portrayal inspired by a historical figure, not a verified account of Fossett’s life in the show’s year.
What is known about the real Mamie Fossett?
Town & Country reports that an 1898 newspaper described Fossett and fellow deputy marshal S. M. Burche as among the first two women to do active field work as U.S. deputy marshals. The newspaper characterized the women as “young, good looking, educated, and full of the wild West spirit” and “brave as any man,” wording reported by Town & Country rather than independently verified here from the newspaper page itself. Town & Country’s account
That report supports a limited but significant conclusion: Fossett was associated with active field service, not only clerical work. It does not establish a detailed biography, a complete service record, or personal details such as her family, motives, or private life.
Why does 1923 differ from the reported historical timeline?
1923 places its story in 1923, while Dexerto reports that Fossett worked as a U.S. deputy marshal in Oklahoma between the late 1800s and early 1900s, with most surviving logs of her work dating to the late 1890s. That gap matters: the sources do not establish that the real Fossett was serving in the circumstances or year shown by the series. Dexerto’s account of Fossett’s timeline

Paramount announced 1923 in 2022 as a new installment of the Yellowstone origin story set in the early twentieth-century Mountain West. That announcement named Aminah Nieves as Teonna Rainwater; Carpenter’s portrayal of Fossett is identified in the later interview reporting. Paramount’s announcement
How much of Fossett’s story can be verified?
Very little, based on the reporting available here. Carpenter said, “For better or worse, there are, I mean, maybe 10 sentences written on Mamie Fossett.” That is Carpenter’s description of the sparse material she encountered while preparing for the role, not an independently counted archival total. She said she started from the limited claims that Fossett was among the first female U.S. marshals and went into the field rather than staying at a desk. Carpenter’s interview with Town & Country

Carpenter also described the role’s premise this way: “Yes, she was one of the first female U.S. marshals in the union. Yes, she agreed to not do paperwork behind a desk, but to go out into the territory where more people were dying under this vocation than any other in the Union at that time.” This is the actor explaining her understanding of the character’s starting point; it should not be treated as a complete official service history for Fossett.

| Subject | What the available reporting supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Marshal service | Fossett is reported as a U.S. deputy marshal, with an 1898 account placing her among two women doing active field work. | A full assignment list, precise service dates, or a complete career chronology. |
| Timeline | Reporting places her work mainly in the late 1890s; Dexerto describes service in Oklahoma between the late 1800s and early 1900s. | That the real Fossett was working in the same circumstances or year depicted in the show’s 1923 setting. |
| Character portrayal | Jennifer Carpenter portrays Fossett in season two of 1923. | That the series’ scenes, personality details, or story events reproduce a documented life story. |
The distinction is especially important because the surviving material cited in these accounts is too thin to confirm how closely any particular plot point or character trait matches Fossett’s life.
