The Tearsmith (Italian title: Fabbricante di lacrime) is a 2024 Italian romance film adapted from Erin Doom’s novel of the same name. Caterina Ferioli plays Nica and Simone Baldasseroni plays Rigel, two orphans adopted by the same family after growing up together at Sunnycreek, a strict orphanage Nica calls the Grave.
Who plays Nica and Rigel in The Tearsmith?
| Actor | Character | Role in the story |
|---|---|---|
| Caterina Ferioli | Nica | An orphan whose parents died in a car accident. She has long hoped to be adopted. |
| Simone Baldasseroni | Rigel | Nica’s nemesis at Sunnycreek, later adopted into the Milligan family alongside her. He is mysterious and talented at piano. |
Their shared adoption brings Nica and Rigel into the same family despite their antagonistic history at Sunnycreek. That tense relationship is central to the film’s story.

What is The Tearsmith about?
Nica and Rigel grow up at Sunnycreek, a strict orphanage whose residents call it the Grave. Nica hopes for a family, but her new life with the Milligans also brings her together with Rigel, with whom she has a difficult history. Netflix’s official synopsis frames the orphanage around the legend of the “maker of tears,” a mysterious craftsman said to create the fears and anxieties in people’s hearts.
Is the film based on a book?
Yes. The film adapts Erin Doom’s novel The Tearsmith, also published under its Italian title, Fabbricante di lacrime. Netflix Tudum describes the book as a bestselling Italian novel and reports that it sold more copies than any other book in Italy in 2022; the source gives no sales total.
