What Happens If You Listen to Loud Music Every Day? The Risks and How to Protect Your Hearing

Repeated loud music exposure can lead to tinnitus or lasting hearing loss. The risk depends on volume, listening time, and frequency; practical changes can reduce exposure.

Listening to loud music every day can damage the inner ear over time. Repeated exposure may cause ringing in the ears or temporarily muffled hearing, and it can lead to lasting noise-induced hearing loss. The risk comes from how loud the sound is, how long you listen, and how often—not from music itself.

How loud is too loud?

Sound level and listening time work together: the louder the sound, the less exposure time it takes to raise the risk. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) says sounds at or below 70 dBA are unlikely to cause hearing loss even after long exposure. Long or repeated exposure at or above 85 dBA can cause hearing loss.

The World Health Organization (WHO) gives examples to show how exposure time changes with level: its 2026 safe-listening guidance gives up to 40 hours per week at 80 dB, compared with four hours per week at 90 dB. These are public-health guidance examples, not guarantees for every listener or sound environment. The figures should not be treated as interchangeable measurements: the sound level at the ear depends on the source, distance, equipment, and how it is measured.

The NIDCD gives 94–110 dBA as an average range for music through headphones at maximum volume, sporting events, and concerts. That range does not describe every device or listener, but it is a reminder that headphone listening can reach potentially harmful levels. A sound being personal or coming through headphones does not make it inherently safe.

What happens to your ears with repeated loud listening?

Loud sound can fatigue or damage sensory structures in the inner ear. After a loud session, you might notice ringing or buzzing, or that sounds seem muffled. These effects may improve, but their temporary nature does not show that repeated exposure is harmless. With prolonged or repeated loud exposure, damage can become permanent and may result in noise-induced hearing loss, tinnitus, or both.

Noise-induced hearing loss often develops gradually. A person may not notice a change until high-pitched sounds are harder to hear or conversation becomes difficult to follow, especially in a noisy place. NIDCD describes a CDC study based on hearing tests from 2011–2012 in which at least 10 million U.S. adults under age 70 (6%), and perhaps as many as 40 million (24%), had features suggesting noise-related hearing loss in one or both ears. Those are study-era U.S. estimates, not current global prevalence figures and not estimates specific to daily music listening.

What signs mean you should get your hearing checked?

Symptoms alone cannot establish whether you have hearing damage, but these changes are reasons to seek a hearing check:

  • Ringing, buzzing, or roaring in your ears, particularly if it persists.
  • Difficulty hearing high-pitched sounds.
  • Speech that sounds muffled or distorted.
  • Frequently asking people to repeat themselves.
  • Difficulty following conversation in noisy settings.

WHO recommends having hearing checked if ringing persists or if you have trouble hearing high-pitched sounds or following conversations. A clinician can assess your hearing; do not rely on symptoms or an app to diagnose yourself.

How can you reduce the risk while listening to music?

WHO’s safe-listening Q&A puts the central principle plainly: “The higher the level of sound and longer the duration, the greater the risk of hearing loss.” Practical steps can reduce the amount of sound reaching your ears and the time you spend exposed to it:

  • Turn the volume down. WHO offers keeping device volume at no more than 60% of maximum as a practical tip. That percentage is not a decibel measurement or a guarantee of a safe level on every device.
  • Listen for less time and take breaks. Shorter sessions and breaks reduce cumulative exposure.
  • Use fitted headphones. WHO says fitted headphones, and noise-cancelling headphones where possible, can reduce the need to turn up the volume in noisy surroundings.
  • Move farther from loudspeakers. Distance can reduce exposure in venues and other loud environments.
  • Wear hearing protection in loud settings. Earplugs are an option for concerts and other noisy environments. They reduce exposure but do not make unlimited time in loud sound safe.
  • Monitor exposure when useful. WHO recommends using device or app features to monitor listening exposure. It says that, when using a sound-monitoring app, it is best to stay below an 80 dB average. The NIOSH Sound Level Meter app is one example for assessing environmental sound; it is not a validated measurement of every headphone’s in-ear level.

When should you seek professional advice?

Arrange a hearing check if ringing does not go away, or if you notice persistent difficulty hearing high-pitched sounds or understanding conversation. A hearing professional can evaluate symptoms and advise you on next steps. If you are concerned after a loud exposure, do not assume that improvement in temporary muffling or ringing rules out harm from repeated exposure.
