The Gobbledy Gooker was the turkey mascot inside WWE’s much-hyped mystery egg at Survivor Series 1990. The reveal went over badly with the live crowd, but the character outlasted its infamous debut through later appearances, a surprise championship win and a place in WWE collectibles.
What was the Gobbledy Gooker?
The Gobbledy Gooker was a performer in a turkey costume, introduced by the World Wrestling Federation—now WWE—as the answer to a giant mystery egg promoted at events in the weeks before Survivor Series 1990. The reveal took place on November 22, 1990, at the event in Hartford, Connecticut. WWE’s retrospective says 16,000 people were in attendance; that figure is WWE’s stated number.
When the egg opened, the character emerged gobbling incoherently. WWE says the Gooker danced with interviewer “Mean” Gene Okerlund for about five minutes. The promotion had built anticipation around the egg, but the payoff was a mascot rather than a major wrestling star or dramatic spectacle.
Why did the egg reveal become infamous?
WWE says the audience booed the Gooker and later described the debut as an “unmitigated disaster.” The character made sporadic television appearances for several months, but the reveal became a lasting example of a heavily promoted mystery that did not meet audience expectations.

The same event also featured The Undertaker’s debut match, as recorded in WWE’s Survivor Series 1990 archive. In retrospect, the card put two very different debuts side by side: one became a defining WWE character, while the egg’s payoff became a punchline.
Who was inside the Gobbledy Gooker costume?
The performer was Héctor Guerrero, a wrestler from the Guerrero family. Looking back on the character, Guerrero offered a different explanation for its intended audience: “The Gobbledy Gooker is called the biggest flop in professional wrestling history, but it wasn’t meant for the adults. It was for the children.” FOX Sports reproduced the comment in a 2017 feature. It is Guerrero’s account of the character’s purpose, rather than independently verified documentation of WWE’s original creative brief.

How did the character return after 1990?
WrestleMania X-Seven
The Gooker returned in the Gimmick Battle Royal at WrestleMania X-Seven in 2001. WWE says the crowd gave the character a warm reception—a markedly different response from the boos at the original reveal.
Later costume appearances
WWE records two later costume callbacks: The Boogeyman wore the turkey outfit to frighten Carlito and Primo at Survivor Series 2008, and Maryse wore it during a 2009 Raw attack on Melina. In the 2009 appearance, the person under the costume was not Guerrero.

A 24/7 Championship win
The character also won WWE’s 24/7 Championship during a Survivor Series kickoff segment. WWE’s clip of the Gooker’s title win captures the character’s later life as a knowingly comic part of the promotion’s history.
How did the Gobbledy Gooker become a collectible?
The character’s afterlife reached licensed collectibles as well. Mattel’s official product record documents a 2023 WWE Ultimate Edition Survivor Series 1990 two-pack featuring Undertaker and the first Gobbledy Gooker figure in that line. The record confirms that the set was released; it does not establish current retailer stock or price.

What the Gobbledy Gooker’s story says about its legacy
The character’s history has two distinct phases: a 1990 reveal that WWE says drew boos, and a later legacy built on nostalgia, callbacks and deliberate comedy. The subsequent appearances did not change how the original crowd reacted, but they helped turn a failed surprise into a recognizable piece of wrestling lore.
