The Boeing 737 stopped on a city street outside airport property. The NTSB later identified excessive airspeed and flight path angle during the approach and landing as the probable cause.
What happened to Southwest Flight 1455?
Flight 1455 was a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-300, registration N668SW, arriving at Burbank, California, on March 5, 2000. After touching down on runway 8, it did not stop before the runway’s departure end. The aircraft collided with a metal blast fence and the airport perimeter wall, then came to rest on a city street near a gas station, beyond airport property.
The NTSB accident brief records a touchdown speed of approximately 182 knots. About 20 seconds later, the aircraft struck the blast fence at approximately 32 knots. The Board’s account places the impact about 4,150 feet beyond touchdown.
Why did the airplane overrun the runway?
The NTSB’s probable-cause finding
In its accident brief, adopted June 26, 2002, the National Transportation Safety Board identified the flight crew’s excessive airspeed and flight path angle during approach and landing as the probable cause. That is the Board’s formal causal finding.

An unstabilized approach and a late touchdown
The NTSB described the approach as unstabilized and not in compliance with Southwest operating procedures. The airplane’s flight path angle was 7 degrees; the report contrasts this with the typical 3-degree angle used for visual and instrument approaches. It touched down about 2,150 feet from the runway 8 threshold, beyond the company manual’s stated touchdown range of 1,000 to 1,500 feet.
Those details help explain the diminishing stopping margin: the airplane arrived at the runway at high speed and touched down farther along it than the manual’s stated range. The NTSB concluded that a go-around should have been performed because the airplane was not in position to land.

Controller clearance and the NOTAM
The NTSB’s 2002 annual-report summary adds that the approach controller cleared Flight 1455 for the VOR/DME-C instrument approach without knowledge of the NOTAM. This is operational context in the Board’s summary; it does not replace the accident brief’s probable-cause finding about the flight crew’s airspeed and flight path angle.
