Keystone Camp credits co-founder Fannie Holt with starting the celebration in 1933—decades before the phrase became familiar in summer promotions. That camp tradition is distinct from Australia’s later midwinter celebrations, which use July to enjoy Christmas in winter.
Where did Christmas in July begin?
Keystone Camp, in Brevard, North Carolina, is the setting for the earliest well-documented American Christmas in July celebration in the accounts available. The camp credits its co-founder Fannie Holt with originating the idea in the summer of 1933. Keystone Camp’s retrospective says the camp’s director emeritus, Page Lemel, traced the idea to Holt and noted that she shared the program with friends in Washington, D.C., that November.
Garden & Gun’s account identifies the first celebration as July 24–25, 1933. The dates and camp’s attribution make Keystone the strongest documented American origin—not proof that nobody had ever marked Christmas in summer informally elsewhere.
What did the 1933 celebration look like?
Garden & Gun describes a two-day camp holiday with a tree decorated in colored lights, carols, gifts, Santa’s arrival, and cotton tossed to resemble snow. The account also recounts camper Blanche Ulmer Pavlis remembering Santa’s entrance: “Then who should arrive but Santa Claus himself…” These vivid details come from the retrospective reporting and camp records; they should not be mistaken for a direct quotation from Holt.

Why did Holt create it?
Holt’s exact private motive is not established. The camp’s current executive director, Jess Wiegandt, has explained that the celebration was meant to break the monotony of camp routine. FOX Carolina’s report quotes Wiegandt describing Holt’s idea as a fun way to celebrate Christmas midyear and vary the daily routine. Garden & Gun also relays possible explanations such as missing winter-holiday friends or adapting a Secret Santa idea for crafts, but those possibilities are speculation, not a confirmed statement by Holt.
How did a camp holiday become a wider tradition?
Keystone says the celebration continues there, now as a broader holiday week. Its camp setting gave Christmas in July a practical purpose: a mid-summer break from ordinary camp activities, rather than an attempt to recreate winter weather.

Garden & Gun’s retrospective traces several later uses of the idea: the 1940 film Christmas in July brought the concept national attention; the U.S. Post Office promoted an early Christmas-card mailing campaign for soldiers in 1944; and retailers were using the theme in advertising and summer sales by the 1950s. That account sketches influential examples, not a complete record of every use of the phrase.
There is no single official date for contemporary Christmas in July observances. Hallmark’s explainer describes celebrations that can last a month, a weekend, or a single event. That flexibility is part of how the phrase works today; it does not alter the 1933 camp account.

Why do Australians celebrate Christmas in July?
Australia’s version has a different seasonal logic. July falls in the Southern Hemisphere winter, so a Christmas-themed gathering can evoke cold-weather holiday food and imagery in a way that December—Australia’s summer—does not.
A commercial Australian retailer guide links this practice to Yulefest in the Blue Mountains and tells a story of Irish visitors and a Katoomba hotel in 1980. That guide’s account is not independently corroborated here, so the anecdote should be treated as one retailer’s explanation rather than a settled, definitive origin for Australian celebrations.

The North Carolina story is about a summer camp inventing a seasonal celebration. The Australian story is about enjoying a winter-feeling Christmas during the Southern Hemisphere’s winter. Their shared name does not make them the same origin story.
