In “Made in America,” Tony sits with Carmela and A.J. at Holsten’s as Meadow arrives; the scene cuts to black without showing a shooting or what happens next. Other major characters have clearer outcomes: Christopher Moltisanti and Bobby Baccalieri are dead, while Silvio Dante is hospitalized after being shot.
Did Tony Soprano die in the finale?
The finale does not confirm that Tony dies. Its last scene shows the Soprano family gathering at Holsten’s, with Meadow arriving just before the abrupt cut to black. There is no gunshot, body, or reaction afterward on screen. Tony is alive in the final moment the episode depicts; what happens after that moment is left open.
Viewers can interpret the scene as signaling Tony’s death, but that remains an interpretation rather than an event the episode shows. David Chase’s comments about Tony’s exposure to violence underline the danger of his life without settling what happens in the diner. As Chase put it, “Obviously he stood more of a chance of getting shot by a rival gang mob than you or I do because he put himself in that situation.” CBS News reported Chase’s comment.
Chase also discussed an earlier proposed death scene, saying, “Yes, I think I had that death scene around two years before the end.” That was an idea for a different sequence, not confirmation that the Holsten’s scene depicts Tony’s death. TIME’s 2019 coverage places the comment in the context of The Sopranos Sessions.

The distinction is simple: the episode depicts a family at a diner, cuts among the people and activity in the room, shows Meadow arriving, and then cuts to black. It does not depict Tony being shot or show a scene after the cut. The abrupt ending invites interpretation, but it does not make any one interpretation an onscreen fact.
For reporting on the other outcomes, contemporary coverage from the week of the finale described Christopher and Bobby as dead and Silvio as hospitalized. ABC News’ coverage records those outcomes. Background on the series and its creator is available in the Television Academy’s series archive.
