FX’s six-episode limited series Clipped dramatizes the Donald Sterling scandal that shook the Los Angeles Clippers and the NBA in 2014. The real story runs from a recording made months before it became public to the NBA’s unprecedented punishment of Sterling—and, later, the sale of the team to Steve Ballmer. The series is scripted drama adapted from ESPN’s reported podcast The Sterling Affairs, not a documentary; dated reporting and league statements are the firmer record of what happened.
What is the true story behind Clipped?
The series is based on the fallout from racist remarks attributed to Clippers owner Donald Sterling in an audio recording that TMZ published on April 25, 2014. The recording was made earlier, during a heated discussion between Sterling and V. Stiviano at her home on September 12, 2013, according to the Los Angeles Times timeline.
The scandal rapidly became a crisis for the league and the franchise. Players, coaches, the Sterling household, NBA leadership, and the team’s public relationships are all part of the story’s wider context. ABC describes Clipped as a limited series, while ESPN identifies it as a dramatization based on its five-part 30 for 30 podcast, The Sterling Affairs. Those are distinct formats: the show turns reported events into scripted scenes, while the podcast reports the story through interviews and journalism.
What happened, and when?
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| September 12, 2013 | V. Stiviano recorded a heated discussion with Sterling at her home, according to the Los Angeles Times timeline. |
| April 25, 2014 | TMZ published the recording. |
| April 26, 2014 | The NBA said it had begun a full investigation. In its initial statement, NBA Executive Vice President of Communications Mike Bass called the remarks heard in the recording “disturbing and offensive” and said the league had no further information at that time. |
| April 29, 2014 | Commissioner Adam Silver banned Sterling for life, fined him $2.5 million, and said the league would pursue termination of his ownership, according to the Los Angeles Times timeline. |
| August 12, 2014 | Steve Ballmer completed the purchase of the Clippers in a reported $2 billion sale, according to the Los Angeles Times timeline. |
The sequence matters. The recording date was not the date it became public, and the lifetime ban did not itself transfer ownership of the team.

How much of Clipped is true?
The central public events—the recording’s publication, the NBA investigation, Silver’s sanction, and Ballmer’s completed purchase—are documented in contemporaneous reporting and the league’s own statement. The television series is nevertheless a scripted adaptation. A scene, line, or private exchange in the show should not be treated as a verified transcript simply because it is set against real events.
ESPN’s The Sterling Affairs is the reporting source on which the series is based. Its episode descriptions cover the team’s culture, Doc Rivers’s coaching tenure, the Sterling marriage and business relationship, the players’ response, and the NBA’s handling of the crisis. ESPN Press Room’s podcast announcement and episode outline also identifies interviews with people including Shelly Sterling, Adam Silver, Doc Rivers, Michele Roberts, Andre Iguodala, and Blake Griffin. That reported context is useful alongside the drama, but it does not independently establish that every scene in the series happened as portrayed.

Why did the scandal become an NBA and team crisis?
The controversy was not only about Sterling’s words. It also tested the authority of the league to discipline an owner, the public standing of the Clippers, and the influence of players and coaches whose work and reputation were tied to the franchise. The reporting behind the series follows those institutional and personal pressures alongside the Sterling household’s conflict and the question of who would control the team.
The NBA’s April 26 statement was deliberately preliminary: the league said it was beginning a full investigation and had no further information. Three days later, Silver announced a lifetime ban, a $2.5 million fine, and an effort to end Sterling’s ownership. The ban and fine were sanctions; the ownership question required a separate path. Sterling remained the owner when those sanctions were announced, and the sale was completed only months later after contested proceedings.

How did the Clippers sale happen?
Silver’s announcement that the NBA would pursue termination of Sterling’s ownership was not the same thing as an immediate transfer of the franchise. The sale followed further league and court proceedings. The Los Angeles Times timeline records Ballmer’s completion of the purchase on August 12, 2014, at a reported price of $2 billion. That later outcome resolved control of the team; it should not be conflated with the league’s April 29 punishment.
