Dwayne Johnson did not simply decide he disliked the name The Rock. He says Hollywood advisers urged him to stop using the persona and downplay his wrestling past as he moved into film. That later pressure is separate from his early objection to another proposed wrestling name, Rocky Maivia—which he felt left too little room for an identity of his own.
Two different stories sit behind the headline
The confusion begins with two names from two stages of Johnson’s career. He disliked Rocky Maivia, the name proposed for his wrestling debut, but says he liked The Rock when it was suggested later. Years afterward, during his transition to Hollywood, he says he was advised to distance himself from The Rock and professional wrestling.
Why Johnson objected to Rocky Maivia
In a WIRED interview, Johnson said Vince McMahon proposed Rocky Maivia by combining the first name of his father, wrestler Rocky Johnson, with the surname of his grandfather, wrestler Peter Maivia. Johnson said he was proud of his family but wanted an identity and space of his own: “I wanted my own identity, I wanted my own space.”
That objection was about the proposed name Rocky Maivia—not a rejection of The Rock. Johnson recalled that as his character became a villain, the name was shortened to The Rock. He credited mentor and father figure Pat Patterson with suggesting it, and said, “I love it!” (WIRED interview.)

What Johnson says Hollywood wanted him to change
A few years into his film career, which he placed around the mid-2000s, Johnson says he received advice to alter both his appearance and the way he presented his past. In a Vanity Fair interview, he described being told to lose weight, change his eating and gym habits, and avoid referring to The Rock or the world of professional wrestling.
ABC News reported on October 12, 2022, that Johnson recalled being told to diet and stop going to the gym because he was considered too big, as well as not to use The Rock name. He said he bought into that advice for a couple of years before deciding to be himself. (ABC News.)

The available accounts do not name the person or people who gave that Hollywood advice. They support describing it as pressure to reshape his image and deemphasize wrestling, not attributing it to a particular studio, executive, or agent.

The story is not that Johnson regretted becoming The Rock. His account is that he liked the name, then later faced advice to suppress the wrestling identity attached to it while pursuing film roles. He says he followed that advice for a time and then chose to present himself on his own terms.

The name also remained personally significant after that period. On January 23, 2024, the Associated Press reported an agreement with WWE that would give Johnson rights to The Rock name; AP quoted him saying it meant a lot to him personally. That later rights development is distinct from the Hollywood advice he described. (Associated Press.)
