Will Forte made The Last Man on Earth to pursue an unusual, character-led comedy with longtime collaborators Phil Lord and Christopher Miller—not to explain every detail of its apocalypse. Fox canceled the series after four seasons in May 2018, leaving its masked-survivor cliffhanger unresolved. Forte later described a possible Season 5 story, but said the writers had not settled on an ending for the series.
Why did Will Forte make The Last Man on Earth?
Forte’s account centered on two things: a taste for offbeat comedy and the chance to create with people he trusted. In a March 23, 2015 interview with TIME, he said he had worked with Lord and Miller since Clone High. He described their role as helping preserve the show’s distinctive tone while making it accessible to a wider audience.
“I’ve always been weird, and into weird stuff that has a hard time finding mainstream success,” Forte told TIME. The production itself could be stressful, he said, but that came from the practical work of putting on a show; collaborating with longtime friends was something he enjoyed.
A comedy built around character and surprise
The premise gave the writers room to make unconventional choices, but Forte said they were more interested in character than in explaining every circumstance of the apocalypse. They had broadly mapped the first season’s arc from the pitch, while aiming to keep viewers guessing: “What we set out to do from the very beginning was keep people on their toes.”

That approach also applied to the origin of the virus. Forte said the pilot’s decision not to show a body-disposal scene was made with the network. The show alluded to the virus, but, in his recollection, never fully discussed its cause.

The available reporting establishes the cancellation and its timing, but does not establish Fox’s internal business reason. It would be speculation to attribute the decision to ratings, production costs, scheduling, or any other specific factor on this evidence. What is clear on screen is that the cancellation left the cliffhanger without a continuation in the series.
What would have happened in Season 5?
Forte outlined the next story in an interview on the Good One podcast, reported by TVLine on August 5, 2018. The masked people had survived the virus in an underground bunker. They would regard the original group as a threat and quarantine them.

From quarantine to a fatal mistake
- The bunker survivors would keep the original group isolated because they feared the danger the newcomers posed.
- The two groups would communicate and gradually become comfortable with each other.
- Eventually, the bunker survivors would let someone out.
- That contact would reveal the danger: the original survivors were immune to the virus but still carried it. As Forte put it, “We are immune to the virus, but we’re carriers.” Their contact would infect and kill the bunker group.
Forte said the planned arc would run for four or five episodes. In a separate account reported by TheWrap on July 30, 2018, he explained that introducing the bunker survivors was meant to disrupt a point when the existing characters had reached a stable place and risked stagnating. He said the idea initially felt uncertain, until another idea made him comfortable bringing the new group into the story.

No. Forte had a plan for continuing the cliffhanger, but told TVLine that he and the writers had not decided how the series as a whole would end. He said they would have worked out an ending that felt fitting for the audience. The Season 5 outline was therefore a proposed next chapter, not a completed finale or an established canonical ending.
