This editorial list compares selected television series, films, and OVAs by storytelling and character work first, then visual craft in its production context, influence, accessibility, and time commitment. It includes both Universal Century (UC) stories and standalone Alternative Timeline entries, so the highest-ranked pick is not necessarily the best first watch for every viewer.
How this ranking works
The official GUNDAM catalog groups works under Universal Century and Alternative Timeline labels and includes series and films. Bandai Hobby’s 2023 Gundam history catalogue also traces the franchise across television, film, and OVA formats. This list treats those formats together, while recognizing that a film or short OVA has less room to develop a story than a long television series.
The ranking gives the greatest weight to narrative and character execution. Visual craft is judged in the context of each work’s production era; influence matters, but does not automatically put a foundational title first. Accessibility and viewing commitment help distinguish an excellent continuation from a strong standalone starting point. These are editorial judgments, not an official verdict, measured quality scores, or a claim about audience consensus.
The ranked Gundam anime
-
Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) — the essential foundation
The franchise’s historical starting point earns the top spot for establishing the conflict, characters, and world that later UC works build on. Bandai Hobby’s 2023 catalogue identifies it as the first Gundam series, set during the One Year War in UC 0079, and centers its account on Amuro Ray and his rival Char Aznable. Its age and place at the beginning of a larger continuity make it a less frictionless entry than a self-contained alternate-timeline story, but it is the clearest starting point for viewers who want to understand the UC’s roots.

-
Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack — a major UC destination
Included as a film and as part of the connected UC path, this is a better destination than a first stop for someone arriving without context. A reader discussion identifies it alongside the original series, Zeta Gundam, and Gundam ZZ as part of a main UC watch path; that is fan guidance, not an official required order. Its placement here reflects the value of watching a film within a wider continuity, rather than a claim that it stands alone as the strongest introduction.
-
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam — the next step for UC viewers
Zeta belongs on a continuity-aware list because it is commonly placed after the original series in the main UC path described by fans. That relationship is the reason to approach it as a follow-up rather than a shortcut into the franchise. The sources used for this ranking establish its place in that fan-recommended path, but do not provide enough detail to make a scene-by-scene or technical comparison with other entries.
Rank #2
Bandai Hobby - Mobile Suit Gundam - RX-78-2 Gundam ver. 2.0 RG 1/144 Model Kit- The latest internal frame design features a semi-monocoque structure, letting you experience the process of building a Mobile Suit
- The joint structure, returning to the original design, incorporates a new mechanism where the parts that look like joints bend properly by reinterpreting the movable axis
- The legs, inspired by the close combat MS Gundam that it's known for, use composite frame joints to create a human-like outline even when moved
- Details are intricately carved into parts not visible from the outside, such as joints and the backs of parts. Noticeable mounting holes have been removed, resulting in a seamless, integrated design
- The product box will have a Bandai Namco warning label, which is proof that you are purchasing an officially licensed product
-
Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ — the continuation, not a universal starting point
Gundam ZZ is likewise named in the fan-described sequence linking the original Gundam, Zeta Gundam, and Char’s Counterattack. It is most useful to consider as part of that broader UC route. Viewers who simply want a self-contained entry can instead begin with an Alternative Timeline title from the official catalog, without treating this connected sequence as a prerequisite for the whole franchise.
-
A standalone Alternative Timeline series — the best low-commitment route
Alternative Timeline works are the practical choice for newcomers who do not want to begin with the central UC sequence. The official catalog separates them from UC works, which lets a viewer choose an independent route rather than learn continuity first. Because the available source material here does not establish a defensible comparison among specific Alternative Timeline titles, this ranking does not invent a winner or assign one a precise position. Choose an entry whose official synopsis and format appeal to you, then continue within that title’s own continuity if it has one.

Where to start if you are new to Gundam
- Want the franchise’s historical foundation? Start with Mobile Suit Gundam (1979), then follow the UC path through Zeta Gundam, Gundam ZZ, and Char’s Counterattack. That sequence is an example of fan guidance, not an official mandated order.
- Want an independent first story? Choose an Alternative Timeline entry in the official catalog. It avoids making the central UC sequence a prerequisite.
- Already know the UC and want a continuation? Use the catalog’s UC labels to identify linked works and check their placement before watching. A title’s accessibility depends on its continuity, not simply whether it is a film or series.
How to choose a viewing order
There is no single order that serves every goal. A viewer seeking the roots of the franchise can follow the connected main UC path offered in fan discussions: original Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta Gundam, Gundam ZZ, and Char’s Counterattack. Someone seeking a low-barrier introduction can start with a catalogued Alternative Timeline work instead. Treat these as two different routes: one follows linked continuity; the other offers a way into Gundam without beginning at the UC’s start.
Before choosing, check whether the title is a series, film, or OVA and what other works its timeline connects to. Runtime and storytelling space differ by format, and the official catalog is the better reference for classification than a universal watch-order claim.

Where to check streaming availability
Streaming rights can change by title, service, and region. The official site says it provides streaming information, and GUNDAM.INFO’s streaming-calendar notice points readers to title-level updates. Check the specific title and your country before planning a watch-through; availability in one region or at one date does not establish access elsewhere.
