The Best Memes About RFK Jr.’s Brain Worm—and the Story Behind Them

The brain-worm memes followed a 2024 report about Kennedy’s account of a 2010 episode. Here’s the story behind the jokes—and where the medical facts stop.

The “brain worm” memes took off after a May 8, 2024 report described Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s account of a much older medical episode. Their punchlines range from a worm finding nothing to eat to one taking control during a presidency—but those are jokes, not medical findings. Kennedy eventually joined in, turning the story into a self-deprecating political gag.

What Kennedy said happened—and when

The meme wave followed a New York Times report published May 8, 2024, which recounted Kennedy’s 2012 deposition. In it, he described a 2010 period of memory loss and mental fogginess. Kennedy said doctors saw a dark spot on a brain scan, and that one doctor believed it was the remnant of a dead parasite.

That account did not publicly establish what species the parasite was, or independently confirm its identity. The Los Angeles Times reported that experts discussed possible explanations, while Kennedy was reported as unsure where he contracted it. Kennedy told The New York Times he had recovered and experienced no aftereffects; his campaign said the matter had been resolved more than a decade earlier. These are attributed statements about the past, not a current medical assessment.

Three recurring brain-worm joke formats

Know Your Meme traces the initial wave to X, with posts and reaction formats appearing on May 8, 2024. The jokes turn an alarming-sounding image into familiar political ridicule.

The worm would starve

One format imagines the parasite reaching Kennedy’s brain and discovering there is nothing there to eat. The joke uses the image of a worm as an insult about political judgment; it is not a claim about his brain or the parasite’s biology.

The worms take control

Another format imagines the worm—or several worms—returning to take over during a hypothetical Kennedy presidency. Know Your Meme documented a “first day” scenario built around “the worms take back over,” exaggerating the medical story into a mock political crisis.

Campaign reassurance becomes a slogan

After a campaign response said the worm “will not affect his ability to serve as president,” the reassurance itself became material for jokes. Comedian Patton Oswalt mocked it as a campaign pitch: “‘The worm that ate part of my brain will not affect my ability to serve as president’ is the kind of dynamic campaign slogan that’s gonna seal the deal for ol’ Brainworm Bobby,” The Guardian reported.

Kennedy made the joke his own

On May 9, Kennedy replied to an account parodying Elon Musk—not Musk himself—with a joke about the presidential debates. “I offer to eat five more brain worms and still beat President Trump and President Biden in a debate,” he wrote, then added, “I feel confident of the result even with a six-worm handicap,” according to The Guardian.

He reused the reference at the Libertarian Party convention on May 24, 2024. Making an argument about pandemic powers and the Constitution, Kennedy said, “Maybe a brain worm ate that part of my memory, but I don’t recall any part of the United States Constitution where there’s an exemption for pandemics,” the Associated Press reported. The line shows how the meme had become a ready-made self-deprecating political reference, not just a reaction to the original news.

Why the joke works—and where the facts end

The comic contrast is between an extraordinary image—a parasite reportedly associated with a presidential candidate’s brain—and the routine language of campaign competence and fitness for office. “Brain worm” also works both literally and metaphorically, letting meme-makers turn a reported medical episode into a broad jab at cognition or political views. That is an interpretation of the joke formats, not evidence of what every person sharing them intended.

Know Your Meme documents examples and individual post engagement snapshots, but those figures belong to particular posts at particular times; they do not establish total reach or current popularity. One Reddit commenter condensed the premise into the question, “Now that the worm is dead, who’s driving this thing?” It is a vivid example of reader phrasing, not a measure of how widely the line was used.

How to read the memes

  • Reported account: Kennedy described a 2010 episode involving memory problems and said a doctor thought a scan showed the remnant of a dead parasite.
  • Medical uncertainty: The public account did not identify the parasite’s species or establish where Kennedy acquired it.
  • Meme exaggeration: Starving worms, worms taking over, and mock fitness-for-office slogans are punchlines, not medical evidence.
  • Kennedy’s own jokes: His “five more brain worms” post and convention line were self-deprecating riffs on the story.
